Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Limited

Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Limited (MePGCL) is described in MeECL's history as the 'generation utility arm' of the unbundled Meghalaya State Electricity Board, created along with Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (the holding company), Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (the distribution utility arm) and Meghalaya Power Transmission Corporation Limited (the transmission utility arm) under the Meghalaya Power Sector Reforms Transfer Scheme 2010. MeECL, the holding company, is a state-owned electric utility company headquartered in Shillong, Meghalaya, India, engaged in generation, transmission and distribution of hydro-power.

Meghalaya State Electricity Board (MeSEB) was constituted under Section (5) of the Electricity (Supply) Act 1948 by the Government of Meghalaya vide notification no. PE 304/74 dated 21/12/1974, and came into existence from 21.01.1975. It was initially responsible for the co-ordinated development of generation, transmission and distribution of electricity in Meghalaya. To bring about accountability, transparency, competitiveness, reduction of losses and improved performance for better customer satisfaction, the government unbundled MeSEB into four corporations under the Meghalaya Power Sector Reforms Transfer Scheme 2010: Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL), the holding company; Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL), the distribution utility arm; Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Limited (MePGCL), the generation utility arm; and Meghalaya Power Transmission Corporation Limited (MePTCL), the transmission utility arm.
