Overview

Mega Clásicos, also known simply as Mega or Mega TV, is a Honduran free-to-air television channel owned by the Ferrari family and operated by Corporación Televicentro. Launched in 2006, it is the youngest member of the Televicentro channel family and the group's first channel to broadcast on the UHF band, using channel 24 in Tegucigalpa and channel 36 in San Pedro Sula. The channel was created as a preparatory step ahead of the digitalization of the VHF channels through which Televicentro had broadcast for more than half a century; after receiving mirror channels from Conatel for simultaneous high-definition digital transmission, the company presidency decided it was important to gain prior experience in that spectrum, and Mega TV was born. In its early years Mega repeated much of the programming of its older siblings Canal 5, TSi and Telecadena 7 y 4, but two years after launch it attracted public interest with a combination of Televicentro's star products: telenovelas, entertainment, children's programming, sports and films. Today its schedule is built around the media archive of Televicentro, including series, comedy, telenovelas, nostalgic films and reruns of original productions from its sister channels Canal 5 and TSi. Its programming is aimed at adult men and women. Mega broadcasts Monday to Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and has gradually been incorporated into the main cable companies in Honduras's two largest cities. The channel's signal has even been carried by one cable operator's own means to the tourist destination of Tela, and short-term expansion to other cities was anticipated, with the possibility of joining Televicentro's satellite capacity if economically feasible. As part of Corporación Televicentro, Mega Clásicos sits within a media group that also operates Canal 5, TSi, Telecadena 7 y 4 and Canal Deportes TVC, and that maintains a corporate presence through Televicentro.com and its employment portal.

History

Mega TV was presented in 2006 as the new channel of Corporación Televicentro. It is the youngest member of the group's channel family and the first to broadcast on the UHF band, using channel 24 for Tegucigalpa and channel 36 for San Pedro Sula. The channel emerged as the corporation's preparation to broadcast on that band ahead of the digitalization of the VHF channels, where its signals had been transmitted for more than half a century. With the arrival of digital TV, Televicentro received mirror channels from Conatel to broadcast its signals simultaneously in high-definition digital format. Prior to that, the company presidency decided it was important to have prior experience in that spectrum, and thus the channel was born as Mega TV. In its beginnings it repeated much of the programming of its older siblings (Canal 5, TSi and Telecadena 7 y 4), but two years later it generated public interest by making an interesting combination of Televicentro's star products: telenovelas, entertainment, children's programming, sports and films. Mega broadcasts Monday to Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and has gradually been incorporated into the main cable companies in the country's two main cities. It is said that interest in this new channel was so great that one of them even carried the signal by its own means to the tourist paradise of the city of Tela, so that in the short term an extension of the signal to other cities of the country was anticipated, and if economically feasible, incorporation into Televicentro's satellite capacity. Today the channel is known as Mega Clásicos and its programming is drawn from the Televicentro media archive, including series, comedy, telenovelas, nostalgic films and reruns of original productions from its sister channels Canal 5 and TSi. Its programming is aimed at adult men and women. It remains part of Corporación Televicentro, owned by the Ferrari family, alongside Canal 5, TSi, Telecadena 7 y 4 and Canal Deportes TVC.
