Mediagene Inc. was established on October 30, 1998, and transitioned to a holding company structure on July 1, 2015. It was co-founded by Motoko Imada and Hiroto Kobayashi. Imada had worked in the publishing industry on editorial publishing and overseas rights negotiation, and in 1994 was involved in launching the Japanese edition of WIRED and served as its business manager; she founded Mediagene Inc. in 1998. Kobayashi served as editor-in-chief of the Japanese edition of WIRED, launched in 1994, and co-founded the online media company Mediagene Inc. with Imada in 1998. The company operates brands such as Business Insider Japan and Gizmodo Japan. In 2023, following a business integration, TNL Mediagene (Nasdaq: TNMG) was co-founded, and Imada concurrently serves as its CEO.
