Overview
Media5 Corporation, now operating as M5 Technologies, is a Canadian telecommunications engineering company founded in 1992 in Sherbrooke, Quebec, by John Moran and Louis Lagassé. Originally named Les Périphériques Mediatrix Inc., the company first gained international recognition with its AudioTrix sound card in 1993, followed by the AudioTrix Pro and AudioTrix 3D-XG, which integrated Yamaha's MIDI XG technology. These products established Mediatrix as an innovative player in audio and computer peripherals. In the late 1990s, the company pivoted toward Internet telephony, developing VoIP gateways and adapters under the Mediatrix brand. Its "black boxes," such as the Audiotrix Phone Adapter, attracted partnerships with multinationals like Siemens and Yamaha. By 2009, Media5 Corporation had consolidated its position as a leader in Multimedia over IP (MMoIP) solutions with its Media5Boss product line, targeting service providers and multi-site enterprises. Despite financial difficulties in 2011–2012, including a legal dispute with Investissement Québec over an unpaid loan, the company stabilized and continued to evolve. Today, as M5 Technologies, it focuses on secure SIP infrastructure, Session Border Controllers (Sentinel SBCs), media gateways (Mediatrix), and embedded voice software (M5T). Its solutions enable Microsoft Teams Direct Routing, legacy modernization, and critical communications for enterprises, carriers, and OEMs worldwide. The company reports over 25,000 customers in more than 100 countries and states that its licensed embedded communications technology powers over 1.5 billion devices.
History
Media5 Corporation was founded on July 7, 1992, in Sherbrooke, Quebec, by John Moran and Louis Lagassé, originally under the name Les Périphériques Mediatrix Inc. The company initially focused on computer audio peripherals, launching the AudioTrix sound card in 1993. This product was praised for its flexibility in manipulating musical tracks. Under John Moran's direction, Mediatrix collaborated with Louis Lagassé's local company C-MAC to develop the technology, aiming to compete with larger international firms. The AudioTrix Pro, presented at COMDEX in Montreal in 1996, marked a turning point by facilitating Internet telephony while performing other tasks through voice compression. It offered FM-radio-like sound quality and promised a cost-effective alternative to traditional calls. In 1997, Mediatrix launched the AudioTrix 3D-XG, incorporating Yamaha's MIDI XG technology, targeting professional musicians and audiophiles. That same year, Louis Lagassé sold two million shares in C-MAC for a gain of CAD 24.8 million and invested the capital in local growing companies, including Mediatrix. Also in 1997, Mediatrix Télécommunication, a subsidiary, began developing technologies to integrate the Internet with telephony. Under François Ménard, it designed a device for international calls via the Internet without long-distance charges. In 1998, Mediatrix strengthened its international position with "black boxes" like the Audiotrix Phone Adapter, which attracted attention from Siemens and Yamaha. By 2009, Media5 Corporation had consolidated its position as a leader in Multimedia over IP (MMoIP) solutions for service providers and multi-site enterprises with its Media5Boss product line. The flagship Media5Boss-Branch allowed remote offices to maintain telephone services even during Internet outages. The company also introduced products for large enterprises and focused on fixed-mobile convergence (FMC). In November 2011, Investissement Québec, the main secured creditor, initiated legal proceedings to protect the company's assets following an unpaid loan of CAD 11.1 million granted in 2003. An interim receiver was appointed to evaluate restructuring options. Louis Lagassé, the largest shareholder, expressed a desire to preserve local jobs. In early 2012, Media5 Corporation mandated RSM Richter to seek financing to stabilize its financial situation. Philippe Babin, then general manager, indicated that negotiations were ongoing with creditors, including Investissement Québec, leading to the suspension of legal proceedings in February 2012. Babin stated that the company faced financial rather than operational problems. Following these challenges, the company continued to operate and eventually rebranded as M5 Technologies. It now focuses on secure SIP infrastructure, Session Border Controllers (Sentinel SBCs), media gateways (Mediatrix), and embedded SIP software (M5T). The company emphasizes Canadian design and engineering, with assembly in Canada for the Americas and in Europe for EMEA and Asia. It serves enterprise, operator, OEM, integrator, and critical infrastructure customers worldwide.
