Overview
The Medelserhütte (Romansh: Camona da Medel) is a mountain hut owned and operated by the Uto Section of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). It sits on the Fuorcla da Lavaz, a pass between the Val Plattas and Val Lavaz in the Surselva region of Graubünden, Switzerland, south of the Vorderrhein valley. The hut is named after the Medels massif and its highest peak, Piz Medel (3,210 m), which is the main climbing objective from the hut. It offers 51 beds in six rooms and is staffed in summer and partly in winter; when unstaffed, a winter room is available. The hut is a starting point for numerous high-alpine tours in the Medels group and is also a stage on the Greina plateau route. The building has been expanded and renovated several times, most recently in 2023. The hut is a commercial hospitality operation within the SAC, providing accommodation, meals, and information for mountaineers and hikers.
History
The Medelserhütte was first built in 1910 as a wooden shelter on the Fuorcla da Lavaz by the Uto Section of the Swiss Alpine Club. In 1934, it was replaced by a stone building, which still forms the core of the present structure. The hut was enlarged and renovated in 1984 and again in 2006. In 2010, the hut celebrated its 100th anniversary. In 2023, the roof structure and building services were renewed. The hut has served as a base for mountaineering in the Medels group for over a century and remains an important infrastructure for alpinists in the region.
