Overview

The Mecklenburg-Vorpommersche Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVVG) is a municipal public transport company based in Demmin, in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It operates the regional bus network across the district — the largest by area in Germany, covering roughly 5,500 to 5,600 square kilometres — as well as the passenger ferry at Aalbude. The company was formed in 2013 through the merger of two municipal transport operators, the Demminer Verkehrsgesellschaft (DVG) and the Verkehrsgesellschaft Mecklenburg-Strelitz (VMS), following the 2011 district reform that combined the former districts of Demmin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz. MVVG's service area is a sparsely populated rural region with relatively low passenger potential, so most bus timetables are oriented around school transport, and many routes run only on certain weekdays during school holidays. To serve low-demand periods, the company uses alternative forms of operation such as line taxis and on-demand services requiring telephone pre-booking. Daily interval services are offered on several main axes radiating from and to Neubrandenburg. The fleet includes around 190 of the company's own buses, based at depots in Friedland, Neubrandenburg, Demmin, Altentreptow, Stavenhagen, Röbel/Müritz and Waren (Müritz), plus more than 70 additional buses provided by subcontractors, mainly in the southern part of the district around Neustrelitz. According to the company's website, around 250 buses are in daily service, alongside four or five town services, the ILSE on-demand bus and a ferry. MVVG's offerings include timetable information, town services in Demmin, Neustrelitz, Waren (Müritz) and Röbel/Müritz, the Waben tariff and Deutschland-Ticket, the Aalbude ferry, the ILSE call-a-bus, and the Müritz tourist routes. A central customer centre is located at the central bus station (ZOB) in Neubrandenburg, and the Mobilitätszentrale Mecklenburgische Seenplatte serves as the information point for regional public transport. The company is owned by the district and operates as a municipal transport undertaking.

History

The Mecklenburg-Vorpommersche Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVVG) was created in 2013 through the merger of two municipal transport companies: the Demminer Verkehrsgesellschaft (DVG) and the Verkehrsgesellschaft Mecklenburg-Strelitz (VMS). The merger was a consequence of the 2011 district reform in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which combined the former districts of Demmin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz into the new Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district. The two districts' transport companies were merged to avoid duplicate structures. Another factor was that the route concessions of VMS were due to expire in 2015; under EU law, a further direct award would have required the subcontractor share to be below 50 percent, which was not the case for VMS. Operations in the Jarmen/Loitz area were transferred away from MVVG by 1 January 2016, with services taken over by the transport company of the neighbouring district. The Loitz and Jarmen administrative areas had become part of the Vorpommern-Greifswald district during the 2014 district reform. With the purchase of Personenverkehr Müritz GmbH (pvm) from Waren (Müritz), MVVG took over services in the area of the former Müritz district as of 1 January 2017. Since the beginning of 2017, therefore, the entire scheduled bus service in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district has been provided by MVVG, with the exception of the Neubrandenburg town service. In 2021, the ILSE call-a-bus, a project of Verkehrsgesellschaft Vorpommern-Greifswald mbH (VVG), was extended to the northeastern parts of the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district. Since then, MVVG passengers in the areas of Friedland, Neubrandenburg, Burg Stargard, Woldegk, Altentreptow and Demmin have also been able to use this new on-demand bus. The ILSE service is provided by minibuses, usually with 3–8 seats, operating Monday to Friday between 8:00 and 18:00, flexibly in time and space according to customer requests, provided no scheduled bus runs 30 minutes before or after the desired departure time. The ILSE bus must be requested at least 60 minutes before departure by telephone or online order form. Through the Mobilitätsoffensive Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, bus routes are being upgraded to Regiobus status, characterised by a fixed interval timetable — hourly or two-hourly on weekdays (Mon–Fri) and two-hourly on weekends (Sat–Sun) — with short connections to regional rail services and other bus routes. As of 1 September 2025, the ILSE call-a-bus can be used with the Deutschlandticket without surcharge. The company continues to operate its bus network, town services, ferry and tourist routes across the district.
