History

According to the brewery's own history page, the foundation for Meckatzer Löwenbräu was laid over 280 years ago. Joseff Fessler from Heymenkürch applied on 23 June 1738 to the Oberamt in Bregenz for the right to brew beer, and on 30 June 1738 he received the document with the permission for '...Biersieden und Schenkhen allda gegen jährliche recognition pr 2 Pfund...'. The permit can still be viewed during a brewery tour in the museum. Fessler was not fortunate, and soon had to sell the tavern again; subsequent operators were no more successful, and the property changed owners 13 times until 115 years later, in 1853, Lena and Gebhard Weiß acquired the country brewery at Meckatz. They thereby founded the enduring passion of the Weiß family for brewing the best Allgäu beer. Gebhard Weiß died 20 years after taking over the brewery inn, which Lena and he had just brought to its first bloom; thanks to the courage, responsibility and loyalty of his wife Lena, not only the brewery but the existence of many Meckatzer families were saved. Lena Weiß resisted all purchase offers. The brewery states that brewing craft and responsibility for people, nature and traditions now lie in the hands of the fourth generation.
