McDonnell Aircraft Corporation was an American aerospace manufacturer established by James Smith McDonnell in St. Louis, Missouri, on July 6, 1939. It became one of the major United States military-aircraft companies of the twentieth century, with a portfolio spanning jet fighters, guided missiles, target drones, experimental aircraft, and crewed spacecraft. The company ceased to exist as an independent corporation when it merged with Douglas Aircraft Company in 1967 to create McDonnell Douglas Corporation. The resulting McDonnell Douglas Corporation was headquartered at McDonnell's St. Louis facilities, with James McDonnell as chairman and chief executive. McDonnell Aircraft therefore ended as a standalone brand and corporate entity, although its facilities, personnel, technologies, and defense programs continued within McDonnell Douglas and, after McDonnell Douglas's 1997 merger with Boeing, within Boeing's defense and space activities.
History
James Smith McDonnell's first attempt to create an aircraft company began in Milwaukee in 1928 with J.S. McDonnell & Associates. The enterprise sought to build a small aircraft for family use, but the economic collapse that followed the 1929 stock-market crash ended the project. McDonnell then joined Glenn L. Martin, gaining experience that later informed his return to independent aircraft manufacturing. McDonnell left Martin in 1938 and founded McDonnell Aircraft Corporation in St. Louis on July 6, 1939. James McDonnell became chairman and chief executive, while David Lewis was associated with the Douglas Aircraft Division before returning to a senior leadership role in the combined company. McDonnell Aircraft no longer existed as an independent corporation, but its programs and industrial base continued within McDonnell Douglas. In 1997, McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing. Boeing's defense and space activities subsequently retained major operations at the former McDonnell facilities in St. Louis, preserving an institutional connection to the company's aircraft and spacecraft legacy.
