Overview
MBC Media Group is the trade name adopted by Manila Broadcasting Company, a Philippine multimedia company controlled by the FJE Group of Companies. Its business remains anchored in terrestrial radio, with a portfolio that includes DZRH, Aksyon Radyo, Love Radio, Yes FM, Easy Rock, and Radyo Natin. The group also operates or coordinates television, digital media, events, promotional activities, and talent-management services. The company's historical foundation is DZRH, whose predecessor, KZRH, began broadcasting in Manila on July 15, 1939, under the Heacock Company, a department-store business based in Escolta. After the Second World War, members of the Elizalde family took over KZRH and the Cebu station KYRC. On June 12, 1946, they organized the Manila Broadcasting Company. KZRH returned to the air on July 1, 1946, and the station carried live coverage of Philippine independence and the inauguration of the Third Philippine Republic several days later. In 1948, following changes to Philippine call-sign conventions, KZRH became DZRH and KZMB became DZMB. MBC developed during the postwar expansion of Philippine radio. DZRH became a major nationwide AM network and introduced programming such as the radio drama Gulong ng Palad. The company also established additional stations, including DZPI, which was later renamed DWIZ and eventually sold. MBC moved to its own Radio Center on Taft Avenue in Manila in 1956, during a period often associated with the commercial growth of Philippine radio. The company entered television in 1962 through its subsidiary Metropolitan Broadcasting Company, launching DZRH-TV on VHF channel 11. Its television operations were interrupted during the martial-law period, when MBC was temporarily closed. The company's application to resume operating channel 11 was denied by the National Telecommunications Commission in 1992; the frequency was later acquired by ZOE Broadcasting Network. MBC subsequently returned to television with DZRH News Television in 2007 and later tested digital free-to-air transmission in selected Visayan cities. FM radio became increasingly important to MBC from the 1970s onward. The movement of DZMB and other music-oriented stations to FM created the foundation of the Love Radio Network. The company later developed or acquired additional brands, including Yes FM, Radyo Natin, and Easy Rock. Radyo Natin, launched in 1997, used satellite distribution to connect a large group of provincial FM stations. MBC acquired DWRK in 2008 and relaunched it as Easy Rock in 2009. Under Fred J. Elizalde's leadership, MBC continued to broaden its activities beyond conventional broadcasting. It became associated with Aliwan Fiesta, an annual cultural competition organized with the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the cities of Manila and Pasay. Its broader portfolio includes MBC Digital, MBC Events, MBC Promos, and MBC Talents, alongside radio and television activities. A major fire originating at the adjoining Star City amusement park affected MBC's main facilities on October 2, 2019. The disruption forced DZRH and other Manila operations to use temporary locations, first at BSA Twin Towers in Ortigas and later at the Design Center of the Philippines. The studios and offices returned to the renovated MBC Building in November 2021, with DZRH relocating later that year. At the same time, the group introduced the corporate slogan “Sama-Sama Tayo, Pilipino!” and refreshed the logos of its radio stations. On February 6, 2024, Manila Broadcasting Company announced that it would use MBC Media Group as its trade name while retaining Manila Broadcasting Company as its corporate name. The change reflected the organization's stated diversification into digital media, events, promotions, and talent management while preserving its long-established radio identity.
History
MBC Media Group traces its roots to KZRH, a Manila radio station launched by the Heacock Company on July 15, 1939. The station was taken over after the Second World War by Federico, Joaquin Miguel, and Manuel Elizalde, who organized Manila Broadcasting Company on June 12, 1946. KZRH resumed broadcasting in July 1946 and covered the country's independence ceremonies. In 1948 it became DZRH after Philippine call-sign conventions changed. During the postwar period, MBC expanded DZRH into a nationwide AM network and added stations including KZMB, later DZMB, and DZPI. It moved to its own Radio Center in 1956 and became a significant participant in the growth of commercial Philippine radio. In 1962, through Metropolitan Broadcasting Company, it entered television with DZRH-TV on channel 11. The television service was disrupted during martial law, and the company's later application to resume operating the channel was rejected by the National Telecommunications Commission in 1992. MBC's later development centered on radio network expansion. In the 1970s it moved music-oriented services such as DZMB to FM, creating the foundation for Love Radio. It developed Aksyon Radyo in the provinces, launched Yes FM after the rebranding of DWKS-FM, and introduced Radyo Natin in 1997. Radyo Natin used satellite distribution to link stations across the country and extend MBC's reach into smaller communities. MBC also launched Hot FM in several cities during the late 1990s, although many remaining Hot FM stations later moved to the Radyo Natin identity. In 2008 it acquired DWRK and relaunched the station as Easy Rock in 2009. The group expanded its non-radio activities through television, digital media, events, promotions, and talent management. It returned to television with DZRH News Television in 2007 and tested digital free-to-air broadcasts in Cebu, Bacolod, and Iloilo in 2018. MBC has co-hosted Aliwan Fiesta since 2003 with the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the cities of Manila and Pasay. A fire that began at Star City on October 2, 2019 affected MBC's headquarters and studios. Programming and production were temporarily moved to facilities in Ortigas and later to the Design Center of the Philippines. Most operations returned to the renovated MBC Building in November 2021, while DZRH moved later that year. The group also introduced refreshed logos and the slogan “Sama-Sama Tayo, Pilipino!” In February 2024, the company announced MBC Media Group as its new trade name. The rebranding described a business that still depends on radio but also operates across digital media, television, events, promotions, and talent management. The corporate entity continues to be known as Manila Broadcasting Company and remains associated with the FJE Group of Companies.
