Overview
Mazyr salt factory — formally JSC Mozyrsalt (ОАО «Мозырьсоль» / ААТ «Мазырсоль») — is a Belarusian salt producer based in the city of Mazyr in the Gomel Region. It is one of the country's principal industrial salt manufacturers and a member of Belgospishcheprom, the Belarusian state food-industry concern. The enterprise traces its origins to a construction directorate established on 21 January 1974, and the Mazyr salt-evaporation plant (Мозырский солевыварочный комбинат) was commissioned in 1982, with the first product shipped in December of that year. It initially answered to the Ministry of Food Industry of the Byelorussian SSR and in December 1985 was transferred to the republic's State Agro-Industrial Committee (Gosagroprom). By 1988 the plant had reached its design capacity of 360,000 tonnes of salt per year. The company produces edible evaporated salt, including iodised and extra-grade table salt, tablet salt, granular salt for dishwashers, curing salt-nitrite mixtures, and dry seasonings. Its raw material base is the Mazyr rock-salt deposit about five kilometres south of the city, formed in the Late Devonian period, with salt beds at depths of 699–734 metres. Industrial reserves were estimated at 600 million tonnes in 1999. Production is based on evaporating salt from purified brine. In 1997 the plant was reorganised into the open joint-stock company Mozyrsalt. Between 2014 and 2016 the enterprise was modernised and its capacity raised to 480,000 tonnes per year. The state, through Belgospishcheprom, held 88.88% of the shares as of 2016. The company describes itself as a leader of the salt market across the entire post-Soviet space and states that its products are supplied to 17 countries. Its salt is marketed as exceptionally pure, with a NaCl content of at least 99.7%. The general director since April 2021 has been Vladimir Dvornik. In 2023 the company was recognised for the best socio-economic performance indicators and entered on the Republican Board of Honour. The plant is a major employer and a backbone enterprise for the city of Mazyr and the surrounding district.
History
The enterprise that became JSC Mozyrsalt began with a construction directorate created on 21 January 1974, when work started on a salt-evaporation plant at Mazyr in the Gomel Region of what was then the Byelorussian SSR. Construction was carried out by the No. 6 construction and assembly trust «Mozyrpromstroy». The Mazyr salt-evaporation combine (Мозырский солевыварочный комбинат) was commissioned in 1982, and the first product was released in December 1982. The plant initially reported to the Ministry of Food Industry of the Byelorussian SSR. In December 1985 it was incorporated into the republic's State Agro-Industrial Committee (Gosagroprom). By 1988 the combine had reached its design capacity of 360,000 tonnes of salt per year. In 1997 the combine was transformed into the open joint-stock company Mozyrsalt. Its production technology is based on evaporating salt from purified brine. Between 2014 and 2016 the enterprise underwent modernisation, and production capacity was increased to 480,000 tonnes per year. As of 2016 the state, represented by the Belgospishcheprom concern, held 88.88% of the shares of the open joint-stock company. In 2023, for achieving the best indicators in socio-economic development, JSC Mozyrsalt was declared a winner of the competition and entered on the Republican Board of Honour. The company has also accumulated a series of awards and honours, including a 2022 commendation from the President of the Republic of Belarus, laureate and winner placements in the «Best Products of the Republic of Belarus» competition (2018, 2019, 2021), the Government of the Republic of Belarus Quality Prize (2017, 2020), «Brand of the Year» gold (2019) and silver (2018), the «People's Brand of Belarus» consumer recognition award (2018), «Product of the Year 2016» in the salt and spices category, and earlier international distinctions such as the «Platinum Star» in Madrid (1998), the «Golden Mercury» for quality in Paris (1997), the «Golden Star» of World Quality in Madrid (1996) and a special «Golden Star» prize for quality in Madrid (1993).
