Overview
Mayr-Melnhof Holz is one of Europe's largest and leading wood-processing companies, a market leader in glued laminated timber (glulam) and a driving force behind the advance of cross-laminated timber (CLT) as a construction material of the future. The company traces its roots to 1872 and operates under the motto "Where ideas can grow" (Wo Ideen wachsen können). It refines wood into timeless and modern wood products, serving the construction industry and other sectors. The group operates sawmills and further-processing plants at eight locations across Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic and Sweden, employing around 1,695 people. Its five high-performance sawmills are located in Leoben (Austria), Paskov (Czech Republic), Insjön (Sweden) and Blyberg (Sweden), positioned in forest-rich regions with good roundwood availability. The product range includes glued laminated timber (MM master line), cross-laminated timber (MM cross lam), solid wood construction elements (MM HBE), wood-concrete composite elements (XlamConcrete by MMK), timber engineering and hall construction (MM complete by Hüttemann), sawn timber, concrete formwork beams and panels, and wood pellets (MM royal pellets). Mayr-Melnhof Holz is part of the Austrian Mayr-Melnhof Group, a family-controlled industrial group with interests in cartonboard and packaging as well as wood processing. The wood division has grown through acquisitions and investments, including the acquisition of the Hüttemann Group in Germany (now Mayr-Melnhof Holz Wismar and Olsberg), the Swedish sawmill group Bergkvist Siljan in 2022, and the divestment of its Russian operations (Efimovskij) in 2023. The company continues to invest in modern production capacity, including a new cross-laminated timber plant and automated lamella centre in Leoben.
History
The history of Mayr-Melnhof Holz reaches back to 1872, when the company was founded. Over more than 150 years, the Mayr-Melnhof name has been associated with wood as a raw and working material. The modern wood-processing group has grown through a series of strategic acquisitions and investments. In 1951, sawmilling activities were concentrated in Leoben, Austria. In 1991, the company acquired the wood trading house Allinger-Mattner, which is now part of Mayr-Melnhof Holz Leoben. In 2001, it acquired the glulam plant Systemholz AG, now part of Mayr-Melnhof Holz Gaishorn. The Gaishorn site itself was founded in 1991 by entrepreneurs Aigner and Dominici as Leichtbau-Baustoff-Handels-GmbH, later renamed Systemholz AG; the first glulam plant started production in 1992 with twelve production workers and four office staff. Mayr-Melnhof Holz took a majority stake in 2001. In 2004, the sawmill Mayr-Melnhof Holz Paskov (Czech Republic) was commissioned, followed by a pellet plant in Paskov in 2007. In 2008, the Stallinger/Kaufmann Group was acquired, part of which is now Mayr-Melnhof Holz Reuthe (Austria). Also in 2008, a cross-laminated timber plant was commissioned in Gaishorn. In 2009, the sawmill Mayr-Melnhof Holz Efimovskij (Russia) started operation. In 2012, the company acquired a pellet plant and a combined heat and power plant in Leoben. In 2015/2016, cross-laminated timber capacity in Gaishorn was doubled, and 40 million euros were invested in core sites. In 2017, a pellet plant was commissioned in Efimovskij. In 2018, the Hüttemann Group was acquired, now Mayr-Melnhof Holz Wismar and Mayr-Melnhof Holz Olsberg (Germany). In 2021, ground was broken for a state-of-the-art cross-laminated timber plant, a fully automated lamella centre and a high-performance re-sorting and planing plant at Mayr-Melnhof Holz Leoben. In 2022, the Swedish sawmill group Bergkvist Siljan was acquired, with sites in Insjön, Mora and Blyberg. In 2023, Mayr-Melnhof Holz Efimovskij (Russia) was sold, a pellet plant in Reuthe was commissioned, and a cross-laminated timber plant in Leoben was commissioned. Today, Mayr-Melnhof Holz operates eight locations in Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic and Sweden, with around 1,695 employees. It is part of the Mayr-Melnhof Group.
