Overview
Maxis Muiden is a shopping centre in Muiden, in the municipality of Gooise Meren, in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is located between the Muidertrekvaart and the Diemerzeedijk, on the border with Diemen. The complex began life as a hypermarket and is historically significant as the first hypermarket in the Netherlands, opened on 11 September 1974 by the Maxis chain of the Bijenkorf concern (KBB). The original building, known as the "Maxis Superstore Muiden," was popularly called "the first meadow store of the Netherlands" (de eerste weidewinkel van Nederland) and was awarded the National Steel Prize (Nationale Staalprijs) for 1974. After several changes of ownership, during which the stores operated under different names, Maxis came into the hands of Schuitema (C1000) in 2000. Schuitema sold some branches and converted others into shopping centres. In 2001, because of the local name recognition, Schuitema decided to revive the Maxis name in Muiden. In 2008 Schuitema was taken over by the investor CVC Capital Partners, and Ahold sold its interest in Schuitema in exchange for more than 50 stores, including Maxis Muiden. Since 2003, following renovation, Maxis Muiden has operated as a shopping centre with branches of various retail chains. The name "Maxis Megastores" is also used. The site, including parking areas, covers an area of 64,000 m². Today the centre offers 1,500 free parking spaces, including 25 disabled parking spaces, and the car park is open daily from 07:00 to 23:00. There is a car wash on the Maxis site, and fuel is available from 07:00 to 23:00. Free toilets, including an accessible toilet, are located in the central hall. An ATM is located in the AH XL, and AED devices are available in the AH XL and the Lidl. The shopping centre is continuously monitored by security. Services include parcel delivery and returns for Bol.com at AH XL and DHL parcel services at Intertoys. The centre is open every day and is marketed as easily accessible along the A1 near Muiden and Amsterdam.
