History
Matthes & Seitz Berlin was founded in Berlin in 2004 and continues the tradition that began in 1977 with the founding of Matthes & Seitz in Munich by Axel Matthes and Claus Seitz. The program from the "no man's land between science and art" (the subtitle of the legendary yearbook "Der Pfahl") was determined by works by primarily French authors that are still available today. In addition to Antonin Artaud, Georges Bataille, Jean Baudrillard and Jean Giono, authors such as Botho Strauß, Oswald Wiener and Hans Jürgen von der Wense are also included. Since its re-founding in Berlin, the publisher has been awarded several times and expanded its program to currently around 100 new publications per year. Important series of the current program are: Naturkunden, Fröhliche Wissenschaft, Batterien, Französische Bibliothek and Theologische Brocken. Classics in new and first translations by authors such as Honoré de Balzac, Victor Hugo, Benjamin Constant, Léon Bloy and Michel Leiris determine the literary program as do award-winning contemporary German-language authors such as Anne Weber, who received the German Book Prize in 2020 with "Annette, ein Heldinnenepos", and Frank Witzel, who was also awarded the German Book Prize in 2015 for his novel "Die Erfindung der Roten Armee Fraktion durch einen manisch-depressiven Teenager im Sommer 1969", Nora Schramm, Dietmar Dath, Ivna Žic, Philipp Schönthaler, Lola Randl, Matthias Senkel, Anna Weidenholzer and Levin Westermann. French contemporary authors such as Emmanuel Carrère, Constance Debré, Éric Vuillard, Kamel Daoud, Laurent Mauvignier, Lucie Rico, Gaspard Koenig, Nastassja Martin and Abel Quentin form, alongside Russian literature, part of the program. The Friedenauer Presse was founded in 1963 in Wolff's bookshop in the Berlin district of Friedenau, to which it owes its name. The publisher Andreas Wolff, grandson of the St. Petersburg publisher M. O. Wolff, published 36 prints in loose succession until 1971. From 1983 to 2017 the publishing house was led by Katharina Wagenbach-Wolff. Since 2020, Friedenauer Presse has been an imprint of Matthes & Seitz Berlin.
