Overview

Materials Research Center (MRC), known in Ukrainian and Russian as «Центр материаловедения», is a Ukrainian innovation, research and development company based in Kyiv. It was founded in 1995 by researchers from several institutes of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, giving it deep roots in the country's scientific establishment. MRC describes itself as a full-cycle project, production and engineering science-and-technology company, combining materials research with in-house design and manufacturing. The company's scientific work focuses on materials science, nanotechnology and new materials. In particular, MRC specializes in the research and development of 2D nanomaterials such as MXenes, MAX-phase ceramics, and porous carbon nanomaterials known as CDCs. It has also researched the properties and applications of transition metal oxide nanopowders for solar panels and self-cleaning surfaces, and it manufactures electrolytic solar cells from its own materials. This places MRC at the intersection of advanced materials chemistry and applied energy technology. Beyond research, MRC operates a substantial engineering department. It provides technology development, engineering design and calculations, and manufacturing of non-standard experimental equipment and laboratory prototypes, and it can scale technologies up to pilot lines. A distinctive feature of the company is that it combines strong scientific potential with its own engineering design group and metal-working manufacturing base. This allows MRC to offer a complete cycle of product manufacturing, from concept and engineering design through to production and service. MRC's product and service range spans R&D projects, international scientific research and education, technological and laboratory equipment, and new energy. The company develops and produces its 2D nanomaterials and high-quality custom laboratory, research and technological equipment in Ukraine, applying modern design methods and taking into account technical, technological, operational and aesthetic requirements. All products and structures pass through preliminary computer modeling, verification against regulatory requirements and standards, development of technical documentation, and refinement of manufacturing processes. With more than two decades of activity, MRC positions itself as a partner for individual and special projects of any complexity, serving scientific, educational and industrial customers. Its combination of materials science expertise and custom equipment manufacturing makes it a niche player in Ukraine's research and high-technology sector.

History

Materials Research Center (MRC) was founded in 1995 by researchers from several institutes of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. This origin embedded the company in Ukraine's post-Soviet scientific community, at a time when many research institutes were seeking new ways to apply their expertise commercially. From its base in Kyiv, MRC developed as an innovation and R&D company working in chemistry, nanomaterials and nanotechnology. Over more than two decades, MRC built up a dual identity. On the scientific side, it pursued research into advanced materials, including 2D nanomaterials such as MXenes, MAX-phase ceramics, and porous carbon nanomaterials (CDCs). It also investigated transition metal oxide nanopowders for applications such as solar panels and self-cleaning surfaces, and it moved into manufacturing electrolytic solar cells based on its own materials. On the engineering side, the company developed a strong engineering department capable of technology development, engineering design and calculations, and the manufacture of non-standard experimental equipment and laboratory prototypes, with the ability to scale technologies up to pilot lines. A key element of MRC's development was the decision to combine scientific research with its own engineering design group and metal-working manufacturing base. This allowed the company to offer a complete cycle of product manufacturing, from initial concept and engineering design through to production and service. The company also engaged in partnering arrangements, for example with the company Carbon-Ukraine, to specialize in the research and development of 2D nanomaterials, MAX-phase ceramics and porous carbon nanomaterials. MRC's activities have extended into international scientific research and education, as well as conferences and publications, reflecting its role as a bridge between Ukrainian materials science and the wider research community. Its product and service lines today include R&D projects, technological and laboratory equipment, and new energy applications. All of its products and structures undergo preliminary computer modeling, verification against regulatory requirements and standards, development of technical documentation, and refinement of manufacturing processes. As of the available evidence, MRC remains an active private company headquartered in Kyiv, Ukraine, with more than 20 years of operation and a focus on custom, high-complexity projects for scientific, educational and industrial clients.
