Overview

Materialprüfanstalt Eberswalde (MPA Eberswalde), formally MPA Eberswalde Materialprüfanstalt Brandenburg GmbH, is an independent testing, inspection and certification laboratory based in Eberswalde, Brandenburg, Germany. It traces its institutional roots to the Materialprüfungsamt (materials testing office) of the federal states of Berlin and Brandenburg, and was established in its current legal form in 2004 as the legal successor to that office. Until 2005 the organisation was known as Materialprüfungsamt Brandenburg. The laboratory is located on the Waldcampus of the Hochschule für nachhaltige Entwicklung Eberswalde (Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development) at the southern edge of the town, and it operates a test field in the Eberswalde municipal forest. The institute's work is concentrated on wood and wood-based materials, wood preservatives and related construction products. Its service portfolio includes biological testing (efficacy testing of wood preservatives for authorisation under European biocidal products law, using recognised mycological and entomological methods), chemical testing and analytics (formaldehyde and VOC determination, leaching and emission testing, pollutant analysis), physical and physico-mechanical testing of wood and wood-based products, and building damage assessment including structural investigations and wood protection expert reports. It also performs quality sorting of construction timber and testing according to the IPPC standard ISPM No. 15. MPA Eberswalde is accredited as a testing laboratory according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018 and as a certification body according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17065:2012. It is an EU Notified Body for the certification and testing of construction products for timber construction, and a recognised testing, monitoring and certification body under the state building code (DIBt). It issues CE certifications for construction timber (EN 14081-1), glued laminated timber and related products, and offers CARB/EPA formaldehyde certification as well as services related to the German Waste Wood Ordinance (AltholzV). The organisation describes itself as combining long-standing experience and interdisciplinary expertise in wood with the flexibility of a dynamic, customer-oriented testing laboratory. It serves building experts, engineering offices, architects, construction companies and building owners, cooperates with the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development, develops new test methods, and participates actively in standards and technical committees. It is a member of the Verband der Materialprüfungsanstalten (Association of Materials Testing Institutes) and is accredited by DAkkS. As an independent testing laboratory, MPA Eberswalde states that it stands in no superior or subordinate relationship to other bodies.

History

The Materialprüfanstalt Eberswalde emerged from a state office of the federal state of Brandenburg. Until 2005 it was known as the Materialprüfungsamt Brandenburg. The institution began operating after 1992 on the city campus of the then Fachhochschule Eberswalde as a Materialprüfamt (materials testing office). Its core tasks were official materials testing for the local economy, participation in standardisation work, and research and development in the field of materials testing. In 2004, the organisation was established in its current legal form as MPA Eberswalde Materialprüfanstalt Brandenburg GmbH, as the legal successor to the Materialprüfungsamt of the federal states of Berlin and Brandenburg, at the traditional wood research location of Eberswalde. The following year, 2005, marked the end of the use of the name Materialprüfungsamt Brandenburg. The laboratory is located on the Waldcampus of the Hochschule für nachhaltige Entwicklung Eberswalde (Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development) at the southern edge of Eberswalde, and it operates a test field in the Eberswalde municipal forest. Over time it has built up accreditation as a testing laboratory according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018 and as a certification body according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17065:2012, and it has become an EU Notified Body for the certification and testing of construction products for timber construction. It is also recognised as a testing, monitoring and certification body under the state building code (DIBt). The institute describes itself as combining long-standing experience and interdisciplinary expertise in wood with the flexibility of a dynamic, customer-oriented testing laboratory. It is a member of the Verband der Materialprüfungsanstalten and is accredited by DAkkS. It cooperates with the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development, develops new test methods, and is active in numerous technical and standardisation committees. It also serves as a training centre for preventive and remedial wood protection.
