History
The publishing house Mashinostroenie (originally Mashgiz) was established in 1938 during a reorganization of the Soviet system of technical literature publishing. It was separated from the United State Scientific and Technical Publishing House (GONTI) to become an independent state publisher for mechanical engineering. From the late 1940s, it was part of the Association of Scientific and Technical Publishers (ONTIZ) along with other publishers such as Metallurgizdat. In June 1963, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union decided to reorganize the network of central and local publishers. As a result, in 1964 Mashgiz was renamed Mashinostroyeniye and merged with Oborongiz, the publisher for the aviation and defense industry. Its headquarters was in Moscow, with a branch in Leningrad. By 1972, the publisher was producing 890 book titles with a total circulation of 10,789,000 copies and a volume of 148.5 million printed sheets. In addition to books, posters, albums, and catalogs, it published 14 scientific, technical, and production journals, with more than two hundred issues annually and a circulation of around ten million copies. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the publishing house continued its activities in Russia. In the 2010s, it operated under the name «Innovatsionnoye Mashinostroyeniye» (Innovative Mechanical Engineering). It continues to publish scientific and technical literature, textbooks, and journals, adapting to modern standards and digital technologies. The website was updated in 2012, and since October 2020, the publisher has been working remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
