Overview
Maschinenfabrik Seydelmann KG is a German manufacturer of machinery and equipment for food production, headquartered in Stuttgart with its production plant in Aalen, Baden-Württemberg. Founded in 1843 by Andreas Seydelmann as a mechanical workshop in Aalen, the company has been family-owned for six generations and today employs around 445 people. It develops, produces, and sells high-performance machines for food processing, including bowl cutters (Kutter), grinders (Wölfe), mixers, fine grinders, and fully automated production lines. While primarily used for sausage and meat products, Seydelmann machines are also applied in the production of plant-based meat alternatives, cheese, vegetables, fish, confectionery, soups, baked goods, baby food, and pharmaceutical products. The company operates worldwide through a network of independent sales partners, with machines in use on five continents and in over 150 countries; export share is approximately 80 percent. Seydelmann holds a global leadership position as a manufacturer of food processing machinery, backed by continuous research and development and a worldwide 24-hour service and support network. In 2023, the company opened a customer center at its Aalen plant, equipped with a full range of machines and an EU-approved food production facility for joint product development with customers. In 2022, Seydelmann acquired a 50 percent stake in American Food Equipment Company (AMFEC) in Caldwell, Idaho, USA, to expand its business in semi- and fully automated production lines for the North American food industry. The company's product portfolio includes high-performance cutters, vacuum cutters, cooking cutters, vacuum cooking cutters, table cutters, raw sausage cutters, standard grinders, automatic grinders, automatic mixing grinders, universal grinders, frozen meat grinders, mixers, vacuum mixers, mixer-grinders, vacuum massagers, norm wagon tumblers, fine grinders, continuous cutters, vacuum continuous cutters, and production lines. Seydelmann machines are trusted by master butchers and production managers in small and medium-sized businesses as well as large corporations on all five continents.
History
The company traces its origins to 1843, when Andreas Seydelmann founded a mechanical workshop in the city center of Aalen, Germany, where he built steam engines, fire pumps, and air and water pumps, among other things. In 1885, Louis Seydelmann took over the workshop and moved it to its current production site on the outskirts of Aalen. Butchers from the neighboring slaughterhouse asked him to build a machine for chopping meat for sausage production. The success of this meat chopping machine laid the foundation for the food processing machinery business. As a mechanical engineer, his son, Louis Seydelmann the Younger, combined the experience of his ancestors with the latest technological knowledge. He built the first transmission-driven cutters and grinders. The common meat chopping technique at the time, using cradle blocks, allowed only a few cuts per minute. Therefore, the cutter "Blitz," developed by him in 1910 with up to 800 revolutions per minute, was a groundbreaking design. In addition to butcher shop machines, before World War II Seydelmann produced all kinds of meat processing machines, such as filling machines, bone saws, cooking kettles, smoking systems, as well as shop and slaughterhouse equipment and machine tools. When supplying the population with food became a priority after the war, the company focused on the production of meat processing machines such as cutters and grinders, smoking systems, and shop fitting. Under the leadership of the brothers Ludwig and Horst Seydelmann, the expansion into a globally active company began. In the following decades, the machines became more powerful and the cutters received reverse gears for mixing coarse components into the sausage meat. The production of machine parts from stainless steel and the conversion of power-intensive operations such as loading and unloading to hydraulic support were also decisive. For the grinders, a groundbreaking separating cutting set was developed and patented to increase the quality of ground meat and to sort out hard parts such as tendons, cartilage, bone splinters, and foreign particles. The latest meat technology findings led to the development of the vacuum cutter in the 1970s. The design was protected by patent and became the industry standard. Shortly afterwards, the first cooking cutter followed. This enables cutting and cooking in the same operation and leads to time savings and quality improvement, as flavor-carrying substances that would otherwise be lost with the cooking water are retained. With a patented contact-free perforated disc system for fine grinders, the problem of metal abrasion in sausage meat was solved, and in 2016 at the IFFA (International Trade Fair for the Meat Industry), a vacuum fine grinder equipped with a multi-stage vacuum system on the hopper, pump, and cutting set was presented, achieving higher quality, better resource efficiency, and longer product shelf life. Three years earlier, the world's largest vacuum cooking cutter, the K 1004 AC-8 with a bowl capacity of 1000 liters, was presented there. In 2022, Seydelmann acquired a 50 percent stake in American Food Equipment Company (AMFEC) in Caldwell, Idaho, USA, to expand its business in semi- and fully automated production lines for the North American food industry. In 2023, the Seydelmann Customer Center opened at the main Aalen plant, providing a fully equipped food production facility with EU approval for joint product development and process optimization with customers.
