Overview

Marui Galvanizing Co., Ltd. (マルイ鍍金工業株式会社) is a Japanese surface-treatment and metal-finishing company headquartered in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture. Its business spans surface-treatment processing as well as the manufacture and sale of surface-treatment-related products and equipment. Core processing services include precision cleaning, electropolishing, regenerative cleaning, hot-dip galvanizing, barrel polishing, electroless nickel plating and other surface treatments. The company also develops and sells original products such as the simple plating kit 'Mekki Kobo' and technical books, and it provides engineering and on-site construction services. The company traces its origins to 1957, when Eiji Ida started Marui Galvanizing as a hot-dip galvanizing business in Himeji. It was incorporated in 1967 as Marui Galvanizing Co., Ltd. (yugen kaisha), and later reorganized as a kabushiki kaisha in 1992. Over the decades it expanded from conventional galvanizing into electropolishing of stainless steel, mechanical galvanizing, composite plating, resin coating, precision cleaning and large-scale electropolishing for the pharmaceutical, petrochemical and vacuum-equipment industries. It operates domestic plants in Himeji (head office and Himeji Plant), Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture (Tohoku Plant) and Kashiwa in Chiba Prefecture (Chiba-Kashiwa Plant), and has overseas operations including Korea Marui in South Korea and Changzhou Marui Surface Purification in Jiangsu, China. Marui Galvanizing serves industrial customers in sectors such as IT/vacuum equipment, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals and aerospace. Its electropolishing work has been used for vacuum chambers for FPD (PDP, LCD, EL) manufacturing, pharmaceutical culture tanks, polymerization reactors and stainless ducts for the KAGRA large-scale cryogenic gravitational wave telescope. The company holds JIS Q 9100 certification for aerospace, space and defense quality management at its Himeji Plant, with a certification scope covering electropolishing of stainless steel tanks for pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment, and JIS H 8641 for hot-dip galvanizing at its head office and Himeji plants. It is a private company with stated capital of 58 million yen and approximately 103 employees, led by Chairman Yoshiaki Ida and President Muneaki Ida.

History

Marui Galvanizing Co., Ltd. began in 1957 (Showa 32) when Eiji Ida started a hot-dip galvanizing business called Marui Galvanizing Works in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture. In 1967 (Showa 42) the business was reorganized into a corporate entity, Marui Galvanizing Co., Ltd. (yugen kaisha), a new head office plant was built in Himeji, and Yoshiaki Ida became president. In 1970 the company introduced a continuous hot-dip galvanizing line for chains and began hot-dip galvanizing of small metal fittings. In 1977 it started precision hot-dip galvanizing of small parts such as bolts and nuts. In 1978 a danchi (industrial estate) plant was completed in Himeji with advanced wastewater treatment equipment. In 1981 the company began research and development of new technologies including mechanical galvanizing and composite plating, supported by a Hyogo Prefecture technology promotion subsidy that allowed introduction of various research instruments. In 1986 Marui Galvanizing entered stainless steel electropolishing and resin coating on plated surfaces. In 1988 it began mechanical galvanizing using technology introduced from the United States, started developing its own products, and launched the simple plating kit 'Mekki Gokko'. In 1989 'Mekki Gokko' won awards at exhibitions. In 1990 the company began manufacturing and selling the weld-burn removal device 'Sabi Toru Sasuke', the metal coating tool 'Berme Decole', and the precious metal cleaning device 'Teruko'. In 1991 a manipulator was introduced to the hot-dip galvanizing line at the danchi plant. In 1992 the company was reorganized as a kabushiki kaisha (stock company), increased its capital to 10 million yen, completed an automatic special coating line at the danchi plant, and received an order for electropolishing of synthetic reaction tanks for the modern petrochemical industry, with on-site work performed in South Korea. In 2001 the danchi plant was expanded and large-scale electropolishing equipment was introduced. In 2003 land for a new plant was acquired adjacent to the danchi plant. In 2004 Korea Marui Co., Ltd. was established in South Korea and began electropolishing operations; the Tohoku Plant was opened in Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture, with large-scale electropolishing equipment. In 2006 a clean room was introduced at the Tohoku Plant and precision cleaning operations began; capital was increased to 31 million yen; the Chiba-Kashiwa Plant was opened in Kashiwa, Chiba Prefecture, with large-scale electropolishing equipment and a clean room, also starting precision cleaning; the danchi plant was renamed the Himeji Plant and a second warehouse was built there. In 2011 the Tohoku Plant was damaged by the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake, and operations resumed in May after disaster recovery. In 2012 a new plant, Changzhou Marui Surface Purification, was established in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, China; the company received an order for electropolishing of stainless steel ducts for the KAGRA large-scale cryogenic gravitational wave telescope; it began joint research with KEK (High Energy Accelerator Research Organization) on electropolishing of niobium accelerator cavities; and the Chiba-Kashiwa Plant's second factory was completed and began operations. In 2014 a large electroless plating tank was introduced at the Tohoku Plant and preparations for JIS Q 9100 certification began. In 2015 an alumite (anodizing) pilot facility was introduced, and in November the company worked toward JIS Q 9100, the quality management system for the aerospace, space and defense sectors. The company continues to operate as a private surface-treatment specialist with capital of 58 million yen and about 103 employees.
