Overview

Marufuji Winery (丸藤葡萄酒工業) is a Japanese winery based in Katsunuma, Koshu, Yamanashi. Its founder Osamura Jisaku began winemaking in 1882 and formally obtained a winemaking license in 1890; the business was reorganized as a corporate entity in 1949. Its wines are sold under the trademarked brand name Rubaiyat, a name given in 1956 by the poet and translator Nichi Kōnosuke. The winery has continued under four generations of the Osamura family and produces wines from the native Koshu grape as well as European varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

History

The founder's father, Osamura Chūbei, was among the investors when Dainihon Yamanashi Wine Company (predecessor of Mercian Corporation) was established in 1877, marking the family's entry into the wine industry. In 1882 the founder Osamura Jisaku began winemaking, and in 1890 he formally obtained a winemaking license. The business passed through the second generation Osamura Sumizō and third generation Osamura Tadao to the fourth generation Osamura Haruo. In 1949 it was reorganized as a corporate entity. In 1956, on the naming of Nichi Kōnosuke, the trademark name became 'Rubaiyat'. The winery subsequently expanded its facilities, including concrete fermentation and storage tanks in 1959–1962, a low-temperature storage facility in 1973, an underground storage facility in 1980, and an automated bottling and corking line in 1981, the same year it began selling vintage Rubaiyat wines. In 1988 it began the Kuracon winery concert and set up a shop and tasting corner. In 1989 it began cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay using trellised (kakine) cultivation, expanding that area to 50 ares by 1993. In 1994 concrete tanks were converted into a bottle storage facility and viewing passage, and in 1995 a barrel storage facility and gallery were opened. In 1998 it contracted 2 hectares of cultivation in Shiojiri. In 2000 it released a commemorative wine for its 110th anniversary, and in 2010 for its 120th anniversary. In 2009 it introduced a sparkling wine made by the méthode champenoise, Etude Rubaiyat. In 2011 it began exporting Rubaiyat Koshu JW to London. In 2015 the storage facility 'Momiji-gura' was completed, and in 2017 a new company building (offices, shop, guest rooms) was completed. In 2018 it received five stars in the Japan Winery Award.
