Overview
Martineum e.V. is a Protestant fellowship and training institution for deacons and deaconesses based in Witten, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Founded in 1907 as the Brüderseminar Witten, it was created to train men to work with young people in the cities of the Ruhr area. After moving in 1920 to the Orthopädische Anstalten Volmarstein (today Evangelische Stiftung Volmarstein), it remained there for over 50 years before returning to Witten in 1972, taking up rooms at the Mutterhaus at the Protestant hospital. In 1977 women were consecrated as deacons for the first time. Since 1987 the institution has been known as the Martineumsgemeinschaft rather than a brotherhood. Today Martineum is a registered association (e.V.) that trains people for work with children and youth, for senior work, and for adult and family education within the Protestant churches and their organizations. Its academic program is run in cooperation with the Evangelische Hochschule Bochum (Protestant University of Applied Sciences Bochum). The dual degree program for deacon/deaconess lasts eight semesters and leads to a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and a Bachelor of Arts in Community Education and Diakonia. The association belongs to the Diakonisches Werk of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia and is a member of VEDD, the umbrella organization of Protestant deacon communities in Germany. Around 300 deacons consider Martineum not only their former training center but also a service community and provider of continuing education. Twice a year members meet for community days, and the autumn annual meeting includes both the general assembly and the consecration of new deacons and deaconesses by the Evangelical Church of Westphalia.
History
Martineum was founded in 1907 as the Brüderseminar Witten with the goal of training men to care for young people in the cities of the Ruhr area. In 1920 it moved to the Orthopädische Anstalten Volmarstein (today Evangelische Stiftung Volmarstein), which remained the home of the deacon school for over 50 years. In 1972 Martineum returned to Witten, moving into rooms of the Mutterhaus at the Protestant hospital. In 1977 women were consecrated into the deacon office for the first time. Since 1987 the institution has been called Martineumsgemeinschaft instead of a brotherhood. Today it is a registered association (e.V.) that trains people for work with children and youth, for senior work, and for adult and family education in the area of Protestant churches and their works. The course of study takes place at the Evangelische Hochschule Bochum in cooperation with Martineum. The dual degree program for deacon/deaconess at the Evangelische Hochschule Rheinland-Westfalen-Lippe in Bochum lasts eight semesters and concludes with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Social Work and a BA in Community Education and Diakonia. The program in Community Education and Diakonia deals with biblical, systematic, and practical theology and specifically relates to work in church and diaconal institutions. The theological and diaconal-scientific knowledge conveyed in this subject complements social-professional competence. Within the program, study days are held by Martineum, covering topics such as pastoral care, proclamation, and diaconal identity. For 300 deacons, Martineum is not only a former training center but also a service community and provider of continuing education. Martineum has developed new forms of continuing education in mentoring in social professions and in church event management. Twice a year members meet for community days. At the annual autumn meeting, the general assembly takes place as well as the consecration of new deacons and deaconesses by the Evangelical Church of Westphalia. Martineum is a registered association. In addition to the general assembly and the board, the two standing committees for Education and Community bear particular content-related and organizational responsibility. The association belongs to the Diakonisches Werk of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia and is a member of VEDD, the association of Protestant deacon communities in Germany. The student body of Martineum holds the management of the federal delegates' conference of VEDD, the representation of all deacon students.
