Overview
MArteLabel is an Italian independent record label founded in 2008 by Giuseppe Casa (Peppe Casa), Claudio Coticoni, Francesco Lo Brutto and Danilo Grossi. It emerged as a spin-off of the music section of MArteLive, a multidisciplinary arts festival, with the aim of producing artists selected through the festival's contest as well as other independent Italian projects. The label describes itself as 'l'etichetta eclettica' — the eclectic label — and promotes what it calls 'the third way for independent music', a hybrid approach in which making a record is not the ultimate goal but one of several tools for building a sustainable strategy consistent with the nature of each artistic project. MArteLabel's founding principles are eclecticism, innovation, diversification and quality. The label seeks to anticipate rather than follow trends, encouraging contamination between the arts and the mixing of performance with new technologies. It operates across a wide range of services beyond record production, including project development, startup support, artist management, booking consultancy, artistic production, recording studios, CD and vinyl printing, physical and digital distribution, artwork and coordinated image, merchandising, press office, digital promotion, online advertising, photography, music videos and website creation. Over the years MArteLabel has produced or worked with artists such as Nobraino, Roberto Dell'Era, Management del Dolore Post-Operatorio, Gianluca De Rubertis, UNA, Gigante and Gio Evan. In 2012, at the MEI (Meeting Etichette Indipendenti), it received the PIMI award for best label. Since 2015 a subsidiary label, Beta Produzioni, has been active, producing or publishing projects close to the MArteLabel spirit, including Odiens, Leo Folgori and Gianluca Secco. The label has 22 productions under the MArteLabel brand and 11 productions or editions under Beta Produzioni. In December 2015 MArteLabel announced a new strategic structure, presented on 13 February 2016 at the MArteLabel fest at MONK CLUB in Rome, with a multidisciplinary format and performances by artists from both labels. The label periodically organises the MArteLabel fest, an itinerant event in various Italian cities designed to present new record releases. After a pause following the COVID-19 pandemic, MArteLabel has stated it is restarting strongly with scouting and productions, with its selection mainly passing through the MArteLive contest.
History
MArteLabel was founded in 2008 by Giuseppe Casa (Peppe Casa), Claudio Coticoni, Francesco Lo Brutto and Danilo Grossi as a spin-off of the music section of MArteLive, a multidisciplinary arts festival. The label's original intent was to produce artists selected through the MArteLive contest as well as other independent Italian projects, renewing the Italian music scene by developing new ways of thinking, producing, communicating, promoting and managing artistic and musical projects with a propensity for contamination between the arts and the mixing of performance with new technologies. The label's founding elements — eclecticism, innovation, diversification and quality — shaped a project that continually evolves and changes skin, not to keep up with the times but to anticipate them, looking to the future with pragmatism and creativity. The goal is to give life to new forms of art that are transversal and hybrid, embracing different sectors and creating new market segments where the market appears saturated. For MArteLabel, the future of music is eclectic. After almost ten years of activity, the label could claim to represent the 'third way' that independent music can take to emerge in the record market without having to distort itself or adopt a more commercial guise, aiming for a product that departs from the traditional idea that still sees the quantity of records sold (physical or digital) as the main objective. MArteLabel positions itself in the Italian music market with a hybrid approach in which making the record is not the ultimate goal but one of many tools for setting up a successful strategy consistent with the nature of the project being worked on. Over the years the label has produced artists such as Nobraino, Roberto Dell'Era, Management del Dolore Post-Operatorio, Gianluca De Rubertis, UNA, Gigante and Gio Evan. In 2012, at the MEI (Meeting Etichette Indipendenti), MArteLabel was awarded the PIMI prize for best label. Since 2015, a subsidiary label called Beta Produzioni has been active, producing or publishing projects close to the MArteLabel spirit, including Odiens, Leo Folgori and Gianluca Secco. The label has 22 productions under the MArteLabel brand and 11 productions or editions under Beta Produzioni. In December 2015 a press release announced the label's new strategic structure. The new platform was presented on 13 February 2016 at the MArteLabel fest at MONK CLUB in Rome, with the participation of several label artists: Anudo, Camera, Gianluca De Rubertis, Gli Scontati, Mammooth, Roberto Dell'Era, UNA, Moustache Prawn, Gianluca Secco, Leo Folgori, Odiens and some artists from the MArteLabel Factory. This edition was the first in a multidisciplinary format and included artists from Beta Produzioni. The label periodically organises the MArteLabel fest, an itinerant event in various Italian cities to present new record productions. The first edition took place on 9 February 2013 in Turin at Hiroshima Mon Amour. Subsequent editions in 2013 were held in Rome (La Città dell'Altra Economia, ExMattatoio, Testaccio), Gallinaro (GallinaRock festival), Cerveteri (Etruria Eco Festival), Castelnuovo d'Assisi (RiveRock Festival), Acquaviva delle Fonti (Oasi San Martino) and Perugia (AfterLife Live Club). In 2014 editions were held in Rome (Villa Osio, Casa del Jazz), Milan (Fabbrica del Vapore) and Umbertide. In 2015 editions took place in Pulsano (Villanova) and San Vito dei Normanni (ExFADDA). The fourteenth edition was held on 13 February 2016 at MONK CLUB in Rome. After a pause following the COVID-19 pandemic, MArteLabel stated it was restarting strongly with scouting and productions, with its selection mainly passing through the MArteLive contest. The label also published the public contributions it received in 2020 as required by Italian Law 124 of 2017 (commas 125–129).
