Overview

Marsh-Marigold Records is an independent record label based in Hamburg, Germany, founded in 1988 by Oliver Goetzl. The label emerged from the German guitar-pop scene of the late 1980s, initially releasing music by Goetzl's own band Jesterbells and associated acts. Over the decades, it has specialized in indie pop, twee pop, and guitar-oriented music, with a strong connection to the Scandinavian indie scene after signing Acid House Kings in 1992. The label is known for its selective approach, only signing bands that have not previously released material, and for avoiding multiple format releases of the same recording. It has released numerous EPs, singles, albums, and compilation series such as the Marsh-Marigold Review. The label celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2013 with a two-day festival in Hamburg. Marsh-Marigold Records remains an active independent label, with its catalog available through various download shops.

History

Marsh-Marigold Records was founded in 1988 in Hamburg, Germany, by Oliver Goetzl. The label originated from Goetzl's desire to release music by his own band, Jesterbells, which he had formed with three friends that same year. The band's sound was influenced by The Go-Betweens, Felt, and British label Sarah Records. When no German record company was willing to sign the band, Goetzl started his own indie label, naming it Marsh-Marigold Records. The first release was the 7-inch EP "Rain Keeps Falling" in February 1989. Both the Jesterbells and the label quickly attracted the attention of the emerging fanzine scene in Germany, and the Jesterbells supported The Wedding Present in May 1989. After releasing the 7-inch EP "Just Like Apples on the Tree" in July 1989, the band disbanded in the summer of the same year following a support gig for The Clean at the "Fabrik" in Hamburg. In the early years, the label exclusively signed bands that had emerged from the Jesterbells or their circle of friends: the direct successor bands Red Letter Day and Die Fünf Freunde, from which My Guru Says was formed, as well as friends of the label The Legendary Bang from Itzehoe, and later Knabenkraut in 1995, a successor to Red Letter Day. In the summer of 1991, the Swedish band Acid House Kings discovered Red Letter Day's music and contacted Marsh-Marigold Records. After successful negotiations, Acid House Kings released their debut single "Play Pop!" on Marsh-Marigold Records in January 1992, becoming the first band outside the founding circle to do so. This led to connections with the Nordic indie scene, and subsequently numerous bands from Scandinavia were signed to the label. Since 1994, Marsh-Marigold Records increasingly released bands not only from its own environment or Scandinavia but also from other neighboring countries such as France. From the beginning, the label avoided marketing the same recording on multiple formats. It also only signed bands that had not previously released anything and that passed Oliver Goetzl's particular taste test. Successful discoveries in more recent times include the Scandinavians Cats on Fire, Love Dance, This Year's Model, and Gulo. For some time, Oliver has been supported in label work by his Knabenkraut bandmate Björn Steffens, who is also responsible for making the Marsh-Marigold Records catalog available in various download shops. In December 2013, Marsh-Marigold Records celebrated its 25th anniversary with a two-day festival at the Nachtasyl of the Thalia Theater in Hamburg. Participating bands were Red Letter Day, The Soda Stream, The Legendary Bang, and Alaska on December 27, 2013, as well as Knabenkraut, Gulo, Honeyheads, Spy, and Les Frères Checkolade on December 29, 2013. The label has released several compilation albums, including the Marsh-Marigold Review series and a 20th-anniversary USB stick compilation in 2008.
