Overview
Markel Group is a Richmond, Virginia–based diversified financial holding company whose principal platform is specialty insurance and reinsurance. The business began in 1930 when Samuel A. Markel established a mutual casualty insurer in Norfolk, Virginia. It initially focused on truck and bus operators, sectors in which Markel and related companies also participated in the development of safety, claims, and operating standards. Over time, the group expanded from transportation insurance into a broad range of hard-to-place commercial and personal risks. The insurance businesses operate through several specialist platforms. Markel Specialty serves customers in areas including small business, professional liability, marine, recreational vehicles, camps, schools, social-service organizations, equine and agricultural risks, museums, fine art, and other niche markets. Markel International, headquartered in London, underwrites specialty insurance and reinsurance across the United Kingdom, Europe, Canada, Latin America, and Asia-Pacific. Its activities include marine and energy, trade credit, professional liability, casualty, property, accident and health, contingency, equine, livestock, and treaty reinsurance. Markel Assurance and Markel Global Reinsurance provide additional underwriting capacity in commercial insurance and brokered reinsurance markets. State National, acquired in 2017, contributes fronting and program-insurance capabilities through its Lender Services and Program Services businesses. A second major pillar is investment management and insurance-linked securities. Markel has owned or operated businesses connected with catastrophe bonds, insurance swaps, weather derivatives, retrocessional reinsurance, and other insurance-linked instruments. CATCo entered runoff in 2019, while Nephila Capital expanded the group's investment-management presence in insurance-linked securities and related alternative risk markets. Markel also manages capital for its own balance sheet through an internal investment organization associated with Thomas S. Gayner. Markel Ventures represents the group's permanent-capital approach outside insurance. Rather than treating all acquisitions as short-term holdings, the division invests in and operates companies intended to remain part of the group over long periods. Its portfolio has included manufacturers of bakery and food-processing equipment, dredging systems, panels and casework, high-pressure containers, and vehicle-transport equipment, as well as businesses in healthcare, construction, data services, plant production, fashion accessories, and asset management. Businesses associated with the platform have included Markel Food Group, Ellicott Dredges, Panel Specialists, Weldship, Cottrell, Costa Farms, Brahmin, CapTech, PartnerMD, Eagle Construction, Diamond Healthcare, RetailData, and Rosemont Investment Group. Markel became publicly traded through a 1986 NASDAQ initial public offering and moved its listing to the New York Stock Exchange in 1997. International expansion accelerated with the acquisition of Terra Nova in 2000 and the opening of a London office. The 2013 acquisition of Alterra Capital materially enlarged the group's insurance and reinsurance operations. Further acquisitions broadened its specialty-insurance, fronting, insurance-linked-securities, investment-management, and operating-company portfolios. In 2023, Markel Corporation adopted the name Markel Group Inc., reflecting the breadth of its activities beyond insurance. The group remains active and internationally diversified, with insurance underwriting and investment discipline at the center of its business model.
History
Markel's origins date to 1930, when Samuel A. Markel formed the Mutual Casualty Association and established Mutual Casualty Company in Norfolk, Virginia. The company later moved its headquarters to Richmond. Samuel Markel's sons Lewis, Irvin, Stanley, and Milton joined the enterprise during the 1930s, and Markel Service was created to handle insurance-related services and reinsurance for American Fidelity & Casualty, a sister company specializing in truck and bus fleets. During its early decades, Markel participated in efforts to improve safety and operating standards in the growing commercial trucking and bus industries. It also supported measures associated with the National Motor Carrier Act of 1935. By the 1940s, Markel Service had developed a national reputation for claims adjusting and safety engineering, while American Fidelity & Casualty had become a leading insurer of commercial fleets. The organization later extended its services beyond its original transportation focus. Markel Service Canada was established in 1951, and in 1959 the national claims division became National Claims Service, an independent adjusting business that could serve other insurers. The safety-engineering unit likewise began offering services externally. The company's insurance structure changed materially in 1980, when Essex Insurance Company was incorporated and licensed to write excess and surplus lines. This move made Markel an insurance carrier in its own right. In the mid-1980s, the company also became involved with Markel Financial Holdings in Canada. Prem Watsa took control of that business in 1985, and it was reorganized as Fairfax Financial Holdings in 1987. Markel completed its initial public offering in December 1986, with shares first trading on NASDAQ. It acquired half of Shand Morahan & Company in 1987 and completed that acquisition in 1990, also obtaining American Underwriting Managers. The company acquired the Rhulen Agency in 1989, strengthening its specialty-insurance presence in risks such as children's camps and youth organizations. Its shares moved from NASDAQ to the New York Stock Exchange in 1997. International growth accelerated around the turn of the century. Markel founded Markel Southwest Underwriters in 2000 and completed its acquisition of Terra Nova Holdings in the same year. Terra Nova provided access to London and international specialty markets, after which Markel developed offices and underwriting operations in the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Canada, and other regions. Markel International subsequently expanded through acquisitions such as Elliott Special Risks and Abbey Protection. The group also developed a permanent-capital investment philosophy outside insurance. Markel Ventures began building a diversified portfolio of operating businesses, starting with AMF Bakery Systems in 2005 and later adding manufacturers, healthcare providers, construction companies, plant producers, technology and data businesses, fashion brands, and investment firms. This approach sought to retain businesses for the long term rather than operate as a conventional short-duration private-equity portfolio. The 2010s brought a major expansion in both insurance and investments. Markel acquired Aspen Holdings in 2010, PartnerMD in 2011, Thompson Insurance Enterprises in 2012, and Alterra Capital in 2013. Alterra added substantial global insurance, reinsurance, and capital-markets capabilities. Markel acquired CATCo in 2015 and joined the Fortune 500 in 2016. Thomas S. Gayner and Richard R. Whitt III became co-chief executives in 2016, while Markel merged its Global and Wholesale insurance divisions into Markel Assurance in 2017. Further acquisitions included SureTec Financial and State National in 2017, Nephila Capital in 2018, and additional operating-company investments such as Costa Farms and Brahmin. CATCo entered runoff in 2019. Markel later continued to manage a group spanning specialty insurance, reinsurance, insurance-linked securities, investment management, and operating businesses. In 2023, Markel Corporation changed its name to Markel Group Inc., formally recognizing that the enterprise had become broader than an insurance company.
