Overview

Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 12, abbreviated MALS-12 and nicknamed the Marauders, is an aviation logistics support unit of the United States Marine Corps. The squadron operates within Marine Aircraft Group 12 (MAG-12), which forms part of the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing (1st MAW). Its principal base is Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in Japan. MALS-12 is not a commercial brand or a manufacturer. Its organizational role is to provide the logistics expertise, planning, maintenance support, materiel coordination, and technical assistance required by MAG-12 and its subordinate tactical aircraft squadrons. The unit supports operational contingencies, theater security cooperation activities, and training exercises across the Pacific Command area of responsibility. Its work enables supported aviation units to generate and sustain aircraft operations rather than providing a product for general consumers. The organization traces its lineage to Headquarters and Services Squadron 12, activated on 1 March 1942 during the Second World War. It was assigned to the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing in May 1942 and redesignated Headquarters Squadron 12 in July of that year. During the war, the squadron served with both the 1st and 2nd Marine Aircraft Wings and supported operations in the Northern Solomons, Leyte, Luzon, and the Southern Philippines. In October 1945, it redeployed to Beiping, China, for postwar occupation duties in Northern China. The squadron was again committed during the Korean War. It deployed to Wonsan, Korea, in October 1950 and supported Marine aviation operations during the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir and subsequent campaigns on the East-Central and Western Fronts. This Korean service continued until June 1956. After its return to Japan, the organization was redesignated Headquarters and Maintenance Squadron 12 and moved to its current base at MCAS Iwakuni in July 1956. During the Vietnam War, H&MS-12 deployed in May 1965 to support combat operations from Chu Lai and Bien Hoa in the Republic of Vietnam. The main organization returned to Iwakuni in February 1970, while elements later returned to Bien Hoa for combat operations from May 1972 through January 1973. From 1973 through 1988, the squadron continued supporting aviation units assigned to MAG-12 and other units operating in the Western Pacific. A major organizational change occurred on 1 October 1988, when H&MS-12 was combined with H&MS-15 and redesignated Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 12. In December 1989, a substantial detachment deployed to the Philippines in support of MAG-12 operations during an attempted coup. In 1990, the squadron supported aircraft preparation and aircrew training for two squadrons preparing to deploy to Southwest Asia for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. From June 1993, MALS-12 also began continuing support of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit in conjunction with an AV-8B detachment. Its enduring mission remains aviation logistics support for Marine aviation forces operating and training in the Pacific.

History

Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 12 began as Headquarters and Services Squadron 12, activated on 1 March 1942 during the expansion of Marine Corps aviation in the Second World War. In May 1942, the unit was assigned to the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, and on 1 July it became Headquarters Squadron 12. It served with both the 1st and 2nd Marine Aircraft Wings during the war, supporting campaigns in the Northern Solomons, Leyte, Luzon, and the Southern Philippines. After the war ended, the squadron redeployed to Beiping, China, in October 1945 for occupation duties in Northern China. The unit returned to combat service during the Korean War. It deployed to Wonsan in October 1950 and provided aviation support during the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir, as well as operations associated with the East-Central and Western Front campaigns. The Korean commitment lasted until June 1956. In July of that year, the organization, by then designated Headquarters and Maintenance Squadron 12, redeployed from Korea to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan. Iwakuni subsequently became its long-term home. H&MS-12 deployed to Vietnam in May 1965, supporting Marine aviation operations at Chu Lai and Bien Hoa. The principal unit returned to Iwakuni in February 1970, but elements later served again at Bien Hoa from May 1972 through January 1973. Between January 1973 and September 1988, the squadron continued providing aviation logistics support to MAG-12 units and other Marine organizations operating throughout the Western Pacific. On 1 October 1988, H&MS-12 was consolidated with H&MS-15 and received its current designation, Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 12. The new organization retained the aviation logistics function while aligning its identity with the Marine Corps' MALS structure. In December 1989, MALS-12 sent a significant detachment to the Philippines in support of MAG-12 operations during an attempted coup there. The squadron supported preparations for the Gulf War in 1990. Its responsibilities included pre-deployment aircrew training support and aircraft grooming for two squadrons that were preparing to deploy to Southwest Asia for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In June 1993, working alongside a six-aircraft AV-8B detachment assigned to the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, MALS-12 began an ongoing relationship supporting the 31st MEU. In its current role, MALS-12 operates under MAG-12 and the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing from MCAS Iwakuni. It provides logistics expertise, planning, materiel, maintenance-related support, and sustainment coordination for tactical aviation units. Its area of responsibility is centered on the Pacific, where it supports contingencies, theater security cooperation plans, and training exercises. The squadron's history therefore combines wartime aviation support, forward deployment, regional crisis response, and continuing readiness work for Marine aviation forces.
