Founders George M. Marcus and William A. Millichap established a new approach to real estate advisory services. The company was founded in Palo Alto by George M. Marcus in 1971. William A. Millichap was one of the first salespeople George M. Marcus hired and later made a partner in 1976, the same year the company was incorporated in California as G. M. Marcus & Company. In 1978 the company was renamed Marcus & Millichap, Inc. In 1990 the firm developed and launched MNET, a proprietary software marketing system. In 1995 it launched Marcus & Millichap Capital Corporation (MMCC) to deliver tailored financing solutions. Between 1995 and 2013 the firm launched its eastward expansion, growing to 80+ offices across all major U.S. markets. In 2012 it launched Institutional Property Advisors (IPA), expanding its capabilities to serve institutional and major private investors.
