Overview

The Société des Amis de Marcel Proust et des Amis de Combray is a French association founded in 1947 and recognized as being of public utility. It brings together people in France and abroad who are passionate about the life and work of Marcel Proust. Its mission is twofold: to contribute to the dissemination and knowledge of Proust's work, and to manage the Maison de Tante Léonie in Illiers-Combray, the house that inspired the Combray of À la recherche du temps perdu. To carry out this mission, the Society publishes the annual Bulletin Marcel Proust, organizes literary and cultural events, awards prizes and competitions, and keeps the writer's memory alive in the places dear to him.

History

The Society was founded in 1947 and recognized as being of public utility in 1955. It has published more than 75 issues of the Bulletin Marcel Proust and has over 700 active members. Since 1950, the Bulletin Marcel Proust has been an annual reference journal bringing together articles by academics and researchers from around the world, bibliographic chronicles, and unpublished documents. The Society also organizes an annual pastiche competition open to all, with two categories — general and under-25 — rewarded each year at a ceremony. Each spring it holds the Journée des aubépines in Illiers-Combray, an annual gathering of members with readings, guided walks, and lectures. Throughout the year it organizes conferences and meetings with writers, readings of Proust's correspondence, and lectures by academics and specialists in Paris and in Proustian places.
