Overview

Man Group plc is a London-headquartered active investment management company listed on the London Stock Exchange. It manages investment products and mandates for institutional investors, private investors and wealth-management clients, with activities spanning liquid markets and private markets. Its investment capabilities include systematic and discretionary approaches, alternative strategies, long-only investing, credit, equities, fixed income, multi-asset portfolios and private credit-related offerings. The company is particularly associated with quantitative investment management through Man AHL, discretionary investment management through Man GLG, multi-manager and alternative-investment capabilities through Man FRM, quantitative equity management through Man Numeric, and private-market credit capabilities associated with Man Varagon. The business traces its origins to 1783, when James Man established a sugar cooperage and brokerage in London. During its early history the company operated as a commodities merchant and broker, trading products such as sugar, rum, coffee and cocoa. A significant early contract was the supply of rum to the Royal Navy for the daily sailor’s rum ration, a relationship that continued until the end of the rum-ration tradition in 1970. In 1869 the company adopted the name ED&F Man, using the initials of James Man’s grandsons Edward Desborough Man and Frederick Man. Over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the business developed from a commodities house into a broader financial-services group. It became publicly listed in London in 1994. In 2000, the group separated its financial-services activities from the commodities business: Man Group plc concentrated on financial services, while ED&F Man’s commodities operations were taken private through a management buyout. A further structural change occurred in 2007, when the brokerage business was demerged and floated as MF Global. This left Man Group focused on investment management rather than commodities trading or brokerage. The modern group was assembled in significant part through acquisitions and the development of specialist investment platforms. Man AHL, which originated with Cyril Adam, David Harding and Martin Lueck, became part of the group through transactions completed between 1989 and 1994. Man Group acquired GLG Partners in 2010 and subsequently operated it as Man GLG. Other important additions included FRM in 2012, Numeric in 2014, GPM in 2017 and Varagon Capital Partners in 2023, subsequently associated with Man Varagon. These businesses broadened the group’s investment styles, research capabilities, client base and access to private markets. Man Group presents itself as a technology-enabled active manager combining investment research, data science and portfolio-management expertise. Its systematic capabilities use quantitative models and alternative data across numerous markets, while its discretionary businesses rely on fundamental research and specialist teams. The firm has also expanded its presence in China: it obtained operating licences there in the early 2010s, received clearance in 2017 to establish a private securities investment fund-management operation, and Man AHL obtained a Qualified Foreign Institutional Investor licence in 2020. The group’s public profile also includes cultural, educational and charitable activities. It sponsored the Man Booker Prize from 2002 through 2019 and has supported literary and climate-related initiatives. Its Man Charitable Trust, established in 1978, focuses principally on literacy, numeracy and educational access, while the Man US Charitable Foundation was launched in 2019. In 2007, Man Group helped establish the Oxford-Man Institute of Quantitative Finance with the University of Oxford, supporting research in quantitative finance, machine learning and data analytics. History

Man Group began in 1783 when James Man established a sugar cooperage and brokerage at Harp Lane in London’s Billingsgate district. The early enterprise supplied and traded commodities, with rum becoming especially important after the company won a contract to supply the Royal Navy’s daily rum ration. The relationship lasted until 1970, when the naval rum ration was discontinued. The business later expanded into coffee, cocoa and other commodities. In 1869, the company adopted the name ED&F Man, reflecting the initials of James Man’s grandsons Edward Desborough Man and Frederick Man. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries it remained a major commodities business while progressively developing financial-market activities. The growth of organized exchanges enabled commodities firms to hedge exposures and broaden their financial services. ED&F Man became listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1994. A major reorganization took place in 2000. The financial-services operations were separated into Man Group plc, while the commodities division, which retained the ED&F Man identity, was taken private through a management buyout. Man Group then increasingly concentrated on investment management. In 2007, its brokerage business was demerged and floated in New York as MF Global. This transaction left Man Group positioned as an investment-management company rather than a diversified commodities and brokerage group. The investment-management platform was expanded through specialist acquisitions. Man AHL, associated with quantitative investment pioneers Cyril Adam, David Harding and Martin Lueck, entered the group through transactions completed between 1989 and 1994. In 2010 Man Group acquired GLG Partners for approximately $1.6 billion and subsequently operated the business as Man GLG. The group acquired Man FRM in 2012, Man Numeric in 2014 and Man GPM in 2017. In 2023 it acquired a majority interest in Varagon Capital Partners, creating the basis for Man Varagon and strengthening its private-market and private-credit capabilities. Man Group’s operating model combines multiple specialist investment businesses. Man AHL is associated with systematic and quantitative strategies; Man GLG with discretionary investing; Man FRM with alternative-investment and multi-manager capabilities; Man Numeric with quantitative equity management; and Man Varagon with private-market credit. This structure allows the group to offer strategies across liquid and private markets, asset classes and investment styles rather than depending on a single product family. The company has also developed its international presence. It had held licences to operate in China since 2012 and in 2017 received clearance to operate as a private securities investment fund manager. The planned quantitative fund was to be managed by Man AHL. In 2020, Man AHL received approval for a QFII licence in China. Research and education have been recurring parts of Man Group’s external profile. In 2007, it launched the Oxford-Man Institute of Quantitative Finance with the University of Oxford, committing substantial funding to quantitative-finance research. In 2016, the institute broadened its emphasis toward machine learning and data analytics within Oxford’s Department of Engineering Science. Further support for the institute was agreed in 2019. Man Group also sponsored the Man Booker Prize from 2002 to 2019. Its charitable work is centered on education: the Man Charitable Trust, established in 1978, supports literacy, numeracy and access-to-education programmes, while the Man US Charitable Foundation was created in 2019. The group has additionally supported climate-related and literary initiatives. Leadership changed in 2023 when Robyn Grew succeeded Luke Ellis as chief executive officer and Anne Wade replaced John Cryan as board chair. In 2024, Man Group announced Dixit Joshi and Sarah Legg as non-executive directors. The company remains a publicly listed global active investment manager headquartered in London.
