Overview

MakeMyTrip is an Indian online travel company and digital travel marketplace headquartered in Gurugram, Haryana. Its platform allows consumers to search for and book air tickets, hotels and other accommodation, holiday packages, trains, buses, airport transfers, car rentals, and selected travel-related financial products. The company also operates through associated or acquired brands, most notably Goibibo and redBus, giving it a broader presence across flights, hotels, intercity bus transport, and multimodal travel discovery. Deep Kalra founded MakeMyTrip in 2000. The company initially concentrated on travel between the United States and India, serving members of the Indian diaspora who needed online access to air itineraries. It entered the Indian market in September 2005 with online airline-ticket sales. From that starting point, it expanded into hotel reservations and holiday packages, then added rail and bus ticketing, mobile applications, partner distribution, corporate travel, and financial services connected with travel. A major turning point came with the company's public listing on Nasdaq in September 2010. MakeMyTrip raised approximately US$80.5 million in the initial public offering and became the first Indian company to complete a U.S. initial public offering since July 2006, according to the company's Wikipedia history. The listing helped establish the business as one of India's best-known consumer internet companies and provided capital for international expansion and product development. The company pursued acquisitions and investments during the 2010s. It bought Singapore-based Luxury Tours and Travel, acquired ITC Group's travel business and ETB Group in 2011, launched the RoutePlanner service in 2012, and created a US$15 million innovation fund in 2014. Through that fund and related investments, it acquired travel-discovery service MyGola and invested in HolidayIQ and Bona Vita in 2015. In 2016, China's Ctrip agreed to invest US$180 million in MakeMyTrip. Later that year, MakeMyTrip merged with the Ibibo Group through a stock transaction. The combination brought Goibibo and redBus into the broader platform and made Naspers the largest shareholder at the time. The Ibibo transaction substantially changed MakeMyTrip's scale and competitive position. Goibibo strengthened hotel and flight distribution, while redBus added a large intercity bus-ticketing business with operations extending beyond India. In 2019, Ctrip increased its ownership stake to 49% through a stock-swap transaction involving Naspers. MakeMyTrip also acquired corporate travel-management company Quest2Travel in 2019, launched myPartner for travel agents in 2020, and entered a distribution partnership with Amazon Pay in 2021. MakeMyTrip has continued to broaden its ecosystem beyond conventional booking. Its TripMoney unit provides foreign-exchange services, travel insurance, and other travel-related financial products; TripMoney acquired online foreign-exchange provider BookMyForex in 2022. The company has also developed artificial-intelligence features, including multilingual voice-assisted booking, automated hotel-review summaries, and the Myra virtual assistant. In 2024, it announced an agreement to acquire expense-management platform Happay from CRED. In 2025, it publicized an updated Myra assistant and a hotel-and-homestay discovery initiative covering properties near Indian national parks. MakeMyTrip competes in India's online travel market with EaseMyTrip, Cleartrip, Yatra, and Ixigo, among others. Its positioning combines mass-market digital convenience with a broad inventory and multiple distribution channels, including websites, mobile applications, franchisees, corporate-travel services, travel-agent tools, and third-party partnerships. The company remains active, although its market position and relationships with accommodation suppliers have attracted regulatory and industry scrutiny concerning hotel price parity and search vis…

History

MakeMyTrip was established in 2000 by Deep Kalra to provide online travel services focused initially on routes between the United States and India. Its early customer base included members of the Indian diaspora seeking air-travel itineraries. The business entered India in September 2005 with online airline-ticketing services and subsequently added hotel reservations and holiday packages. The company became a significant Indian internet business when it listed on Nasdaq on 17 September 2010. Its initial public offering raised approximately US$80.5 million at a reported valuation of about US$478 million. The transaction was described as the first U.S. IPO by an Indian company since July 2006. After listing, MakeMyTrip expanded through acquisitions, investments, new products, and international activity. In 2011, the company acquired Singapore-based Luxury Tours and Travel, the travel business of ITC Group, and ETB Group. It introduced RoutePlanner in 2012 to help users compare routes and modes of transport within India. In 2014, it established a US$15 million innovation fund for travel-sector start-ups. The fund supported the acquisition of MyGola in 2015, while MakeMyTrip also invested in HolidayIQ and Bona Vita during that year. Ctrip invested US$180 million in MakeMyTrip in January 2016. Later in 2016, MakeMyTrip and Ibibo Group merged through a stock swap. Ibibo's assets included Goibibo and redBus, two important online travel brands. The combination broadened MakeMyTrip's hotel, flight, and bus capabilities and made Naspers the largest shareholder at that stage. In 2019, Ctrip acquired additional ownership from Naspers through another stock-swap arrangement, taking its stake to 49%. MakeMyTrip also bought Quest2Travel, a Mumbai-based corporate travel-management company, in 2019. The company introduced myPartner in 2020 as a platform for travel agents and entered an agreement with Amazon Pay in 2021 to provide travel services through Amazon's payment ecosystem. In 2022, TripMoney acquired BookMyForex, extending MakeMyTrip's travel ecosystem into online foreign exchange. The company has also offered travel insurance and related financial products through TripMoney. From 2023 onward, MakeMyTrip began incorporating generative artificial intelligence into its consumer experience. Examples included voice-assisted booking in Indian languages and AI-generated summaries of hotel reviews. In January 2024, it announced an agreement to acquire Happay, an expense-management platform owned by CRED. In 2025, it announced an updated version of its Myra virtual assistant and described initiatives to identify hotels and homestays near more than 100 Indian national parks. MakeMyTrip's current business spans flights, hotels, holiday packages, rail, buses, car rentals, airport transfers, corporate travel, partner distribution, and travel finance. The company operates through its principal brand and associated brands including Goibibo and redBus. It is generally described as one of India's largest online travel agencies, competing with EaseMyTrip, Cleartrip, Yatra, and Ixigo. Its growth has also brought regulatory attention, particularly regarding alleged hotel price-parity requirements and the treatment of accommodation suppliers in platform search and distribution.
