According to its own presentation, it became from 1979 both a place of exhibition, archives and research, and a space for encounters and events, in the continuity of a spirit of popular theatre today; the project is framed by a quadripartite convention between the City of Avignon, the Ministry of Culture, the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Association Jean Vilar.
History
After the death of Jean Vilar in 1971, it immediately appeared necessary to gather documents concerning his work, those of the Théâtre National Populaire when he was its director (1951-63), and of the whole Avignon Festival which he had created in 1947. On the initiative of Paul Puaux, his closest collaborator and his successor at the direction of the Avignon Festival (1971-79), the Association Jean Vilar was founded in 1972 and recognized as being of general interest. Through consultation between the Association, the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the City of Avignon, the conviction was born of the importance of a house dedicated to Jean Vilar and to reflection on the contemporary world of the performing arts. With the acquisition by the City of the Hôtel de Crochans, the Maison Jean Vilar became from 1979 at once a place of exhibition, archives and research, and a space for encounters and events, in the continuity of a spirit of popular theatre today. This project is part of a quadripartite convention between the City of Avignon, the Ministry of Culture, the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Association Jean Vilar.
