Overview
The Main scientific editorial office of the Tajik National Encyclopedia (Tajik: Сарредаксияи илмии Энсиклопедияи Миллии Тоҷик, СИЭМТ; Russian: Главная научная редакция Таджикской национальной энциклопедии, ГНРТНЭ) is a state scientific and publishing institution under the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tajikistan. It is headquartered on Nemat Karoboev Avenue (хиёбони Неъмат Қаробоев, 17) in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Its principal mission is the compilation, editing and publication of the Tajik National Encyclopedia (Энсиклопедияи миллии тоҷик, ЭМТ), described by the institution as the first national encyclopedia of Tajikistan, covering the country's history, science, culture, literature, art and the biographies of prominent national figures. The institution traces its origins to 1968, when the publishing house "Main scientific editorial office of the Tajik Soviet Encyclopedia" (ГНРТСЭ) was created. Until 1991 it produced reference and encyclopedic literature and dictionaries, operating within the Soviet state publishing system and, from 1974 to 1991, directly subordinate to the State Committee for Publishing of the Tajik SSR. Its best-known Soviet-era output was the multi-volume Tajik Soviet Encyclopedia (Энциклопедияи Советии Тоҷик), issued in eight volumes between 1978 and 1988 under chief editor M. S. Asimov, alongside encyclopedias on the Tajik SSR, thematic reference works and Russian–Tajik–Latin medical dictionaries. After Tajikistan's independence, the institution was reorganized around a new national project. According to its official website, work on the Tajik National Encyclopedia began in 2008, and the editorial office continues to publish encyclopedic entries and volumes. The editorial office is organized into numerous subject-based editorial departments, including history; philosophy, religion and law; economics, industry and agriculture; geography, petrography, geology, geodesy and seismology; biology, chemistry, medicine and agriculture; astronomy, physics, mathematics and technology; literature, language and folklore; culture, education, labor, military service, sports and tourism; maps, illustrations and compilation; "Scientists of Tajikistan"; children's and adolescents' encyclopedia; and literary and scientific control editing. The chief editor is Saidjalol Khusayni, a candidate of historical sciences, in office since 2025. As a state institution rather than a commercial enterprise, the editorial office functions as a national knowledge authority, presenting national heritage and fostering cultural self-awareness. Its publications are reference works sold and distributed through Tajikistan's book trade and used by libraries, schools and researchers. The official website, donishnoma.tj, serves as the public face of the institution, publishing news and sample encyclopedia articles.
History
The institution was established in 1968 as the publishing house "Main scientific editorial office of the Tajik Soviet Encyclopedia" (Главная научная редакция Таджикской советской энциклопедии, ГНРТСЭ). Until 1991 it was engaged in producing reference and encyclopedic literature and dictionaries. Within the system of the State Committee for Publishing, Printing and Book Trade of the USSR, from 1974 to 1991 the publishing house was directly subordinate to the State Committee for Publishing of the Tajik SSR. In 1988 the publishing house was located at 734063, Dushanbe, Aini Street, 126. Its central Soviet-era project was the Tajik Soviet Encyclopedia (Энциклопедияи Советии Тоҷик), published in eight volumes between 1978 and 1988 under the chief editorship of M. S. Asimov. Volume I (А — ГАВҲАР) appeared in 1978 (672 pages), Volume II (ГАВҲАРАК — ИРЛАНД) in 1980 (670 pages), Volume III (ИРЛАНДИЯ — ЛЕНИННОМА) in 1981 (639 pages), Volume IV (ЛЕНИНОБОД — МУҲИТ) in 1983 (638 pages), Volume V (МУҲИТ — ПЛЕХАНОВ) in 1984 (640 pages), Volume VI (ПЛЕШКО — САҚИЛ) in 1986 (634 pages), Volume VII (САҚОФӢ — ХОВАЛИНГ) in 1987 (640 pages), and Volume VIII (ХОВАЛИНГ — ҶӮЯК) in 1988 (590 pages). Beyond the main encyclopedia, the editorial office produced a range of reference works. It published the encyclopedia "Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic" in 1974 (406 pages) and a second, expanded edition in 1984 (503 pages), both under M. Asimov. It issued thematic encyclopedias on the Tajik SSR, including "The Great October Socialist Revolution" (1987, 861 pages), "The Laws of Medicine" by Abu Ali ibn Sina (1989), "Tajik Leniniana" (1990, 182 pages) and "Encyclopedia of Persian-Tajik Prose" (1990, 508 pages). It also published dictionaries, notably the four-volume Russian–Tajik–Latin Medical Dictionary by M. Ya. Rasulov, whose first volume (А—З) appeared in 1973 (480 pages) and second volume (И—М) in 1982 (464 pages), each with a print run of 5,000 copies.
