Overview
Mailworxs, widely known under the brand name Mail Alliance, is a German cooperative network of regional private postal companies — mainly newspaper publishers and their logistics subsidiaries — that joined forces to build a nationwide distribution network for letters and small goods up to 1,000 grams. The association is based in Würzburg and was founded on 19 January 2010, with commercial operations beginning on 25 January 2010. Its founding managing director was Michael Kunter, a former managing director of the logistics division of the Würzburg newspaper publisher Main-Post, which belongs to the Holtzbrinck publishing group. The core function of Mail Alliance is to coordinate the various regional service providers so that they can offer nationwide delivery under a single umbrella while continuing to appear under their own established regional brands. Four distribution hubs (HUBs) were set up to connect the regional networks. The alliance's stated goal was for all partners to eventually use a uniform IT system and to offer the same quality standards and guaranteed delivery times. The advantage for the regional postal companies is that they can now offer nationwide delivery and avoid loss-making items being billed by Deutsche Post AG. Mail Alliance became a member of the De-Mail network on 20 May 2010 and took over hybrid distribution for the De-Mail providers of United Internet. By April 2013, around 140 mail delivery companies were grouped within Mail Alliance. The partners of the alliance together generated revenue of 370 million euros, and the possible market share was estimated at up to six percent. In early December 2016, Postcon applied to the German Federal Cartel Office to acquire the majority of PIN Mail and of the national Mail Alliance courier network. Previously, Postcon held an equal stake in both companies in a joint venture with Holtzbrinck. Members of Mail Alliance have included Postcon, the German subsidiary of the Dutch postal company PostNL; Holtzbrinck with its 13 mail service subsidiaries, including PIN Mail in Berlin as well as PIN Mail Woltersdorf and PIN Mail Wildau; Arriva, a joint venture with the regional newspaper Südkurier of Konstanz operating in Baden-Württemberg (since 2011, 51% owned by Mediengruppe Pressedruck and 49% by the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group, together with the publisher of the Badische Zeitung in Freiburg, BS Saar-Mosel Saarbrücken, Main PostLogistik Würzburg, and regional providers in Brandenburg such as Turbo POST Neuruppin, Blitz Kurier Rathenow, City Brief Bote Schwedt, Debex Potsdam, Die Briefboten Potsdam, Märkische Postdienste Brandenburg and Regio-Print Sales Cottbus); Citipost-Verbund-GmbH, the association of legally independent delivery subsidiaries of more than 20 publishing houses in northwestern Germany, Westphalia and northern Hesse, including in particular Verlagsgesellschaft Madsack; and Mediengruppe Pressedruck of Augsburg (Augsburger Allgemeine, Nordkurier) with its subsidiary Logistic-Mail-Factory (LMF, brand Schwaben Mail, active in southwestern Bavaria and northern Brandenburg through Kurierverlag Neubrandenburg). Today Mailworxs / Mail Alliance presents itself as a provider of e-commerce and postal services, offering a low-cost all-round package for everything that fits in a mailbox — whether a letter or a trackable goods shipment.
History
Mailworxs, operating under the brand Mail Alliance, was established as a network of German regional private postal companies, primarily newspaper publishers, with the aim of creating their own nationwide distribution network for letters up to 1,000 grams in competition with Deutsche Post. The association, based in Würzburg, was founded on 19 January 2010, and commercial operations began on 25 January 2010. Its first managing director was Michael Kunter, a former managing director of the logistics division of the Würzburg newspaper publisher Main-Post, which belongs to the Holtzbrinck publishing group. The primary function of Mail Alliance is to coordinate the different service providers. The regional companies continue to appear under their established brands, while the alliance provides the connective tissue for nationwide delivery. Four distribution hubs (HUBs) were set up. The long-term goal was for all Mail Alliance partners to use a uniform IT system and to be able to offer the same quality standards and guaranteed delivery times. For the regional postal companies, the benefit is that they can now offer nationwide delivery and no longer see loss-making items billed by Deutsche Post AG. On 20 May 2010, Mail Alliance became a member of the De-Mail network and took over hybrid distribution for the De-Mail providers of United Internet. Before that, Postcon held an equal stake in both companies in a joint venture with Holtzbrinck. Members of Mail Alliance have included Postcon, the German subsidiary of the Dutch postal company PostNL; Holtzbrinck with its 13 mail service subsidiaries, including PIN Mail in Berlin as well as PIN Mail Woltersdorf and PIN Mail Wildau; Arriva, a joint venture with the regional newspaper Südkurier of Konstanz operating in Baden-Württemberg (since 2011, 51% owned by Mediengruppe Pressedruck and 49% by the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group, together with the publisher of the Badische Zeitung in Freiburg, BS Saar-Mosel Saarbrücken, Main PostLogistik Würzburg, and regional providers in Brandenburg such as Turbo POST Neuruppin, Blitz Kurier Rathenow, City Brief Bote Schwedt, Debex Potsdam, Die Briefboten Potsdam, Märkische Postdienste Brandenburg and Regio-Print Sales Cottbus); Citipost-Verbund-GmbH, the association of legally independent delivery subsidiaries of more than 20 publishing houses in northwestern Germany, Westphalia and northern Hesse, including in particular Verlagsgesellschaft Madsack (Postcon is directly involved in some Citipost companies); and Mediengruppe Pressedruck of Augsburg (Augsburger Allgemeine, Nordkurier) with its subsidiary Logistic-Mail-Factory (LMF, brand Schwaben Mail, active in southwestern Bavaria and northern Brandenburg through Kurierverlag Neubrandenburg). Today, Mailworxs / Mail Alliance presents itself as a provider of e-commerce and postal services, offering a low-cost all-round package for everything that fits in a mailbox — whether a letter or a trackable goods shipment.
