Overview

Mahindra Last Mile Mobility Limited is an Indian electric-vehicle business within the Mahindra Group. Its corporate history began in 1994, when Chetan Maini founded Reva Electric Car Company as a joint venture between the Maini Group and Amerigon Electric Vehicle Technologies to develop an affordable, compact electric car. The resulting REVA, launched in 2001, became one of India's earliest commercially produced electric cars and established the business's expertise in lightweight vehicles, battery systems, power electronics and urban mobility. The REVA and its later REVAi and REVA L-ion versions were exported to a number of countries. In the United Kingdom, the vehicle was marketed by GoinGreen under the G-Wiz name. By March 2011, approximately 4,000 REVA-family vehicles had been sold worldwide, according to the referenced account. Reva also explored broader technology partnerships, including a proposed collaboration with General Motors India for an electric version of the Chevrolet Spark, although that project ended after Mahindra acquired control of Reva. On 26 May 2010, Mahindra & Mahindra acquired a 55.2% controlling stake in Reva. The company was subsequently renamed Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles Private Limited, with Pawan Goenka becoming chairman. The acquisition connected Reva's electric-vehicle technology with Mahindra's automotive manufacturing and distribution capabilities, but also led General Motors India to withdraw from the proposed e-Spark collaboration. In 2016, the business was rebranded Mahindra Electric Mobility Limited to reflect a broader remit covering vehicles, electric powertrains and integrated mobility solutions. Mahindra Electric expanded beyond the original two-door urban car. The Mahindra e2o, developed from the REVA NXR concept, was launched in India in 2013 and later offered in the United Kingdom. The e-Verito, introduced in 2016, adapted Mahindra's conventional Verito sedan into an electric model. The company then concentrated increasingly on commercial and shared-mobility applications, launching the lithium-ion Treo family of electric three-wheelers in 2018. The range included passenger, rickshaw and cargo configurations, and was supported by partnerships intended to improve financing and fleet access for drivers. Mahindra's broader electric passenger-car program later moved under the Mahindra vehicle brand. The XUV400 electric SUV was unveiled in 2022 and launched in 2023, while the XEV 9e and BE 6 were introduced in 2024 as part of Mahindra's new electric SUV portfolio. The Last Mile Mobility identity is now associated primarily with electric commercial vehicles and three-wheelers, while Mahindra-branded electric SUVs use the group's wider passenger-vehicle branding. In 2023, the business was rebranded Mahindra Last Mile Mobility Limited in connection with its complete merger into Mahindra & Mahindra.

History

Reva Electric Car Company was established in 1994 by Chetan Maini as a joint venture between the Maini Group and Amerigon Electric Vehicle Technologies. Its objective was to make a small and relatively affordable electric vehicle for urban use. The company worked with specialist suppliers on motor-control systems, batteries and charging equipment before launching the REVA microcar in 2001. The REVA was later updated as the REVAi, while a lithium-ion version called the REVA L-ion entered production in 2009. The car was sold in India and exported to several international markets. In Britain, GoinGreen imported and marketed it as the G-Wiz. The vehicle's compact dimensions and low mass enabled it to be classified as a heavy quadricycle in some European markets rather than a conventional passenger car. Reva also presented the REVA-NXG roadster concept and, in 2009, showed the NXR concept that would lead to the next generation of its electric city car. On 26 May 2010, Mahindra & Mahindra purchased a 55.2% controlling stake in Reva. The company became Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles Private Limited, and Pawan Goenka was appointed chairman. The change in ownership ended the proposed General Motors India collaboration on an electric Chevrolet Spark derivative. A separate proposed arrangement with Bannon Automotive for production and sale of the NXR in the United States resulted in litigation in 2010; the case was settled in January 2012 without a disclosed result. The Mahindra e2o, based on the NXR program, entered the Indian market in March 2013. It was a lithium-ion urban hatchback and represented the company's effort to move beyond the original REVA platform. In 2014, the company displayed the Halo electric sports-car concept. It also supported Mahindra Group's participation in Formula E, where Mahindra Racing became the only Indian team in the inaugural championship season. The company adopted the name Mahindra Electric Mobility Limited in 2016. That rebranding reflected an expanded role in electric vehicles, propulsion systems and mobility solutions. The e-Verito sedan followed in 2016, using the conventional Verito as its base. Mahindra also developed the Atom electric quadricycle, first shown as a concept in 2018 and presented in a production-oriented form at the 2020 Auto Expo, although the referenced material does not establish a final commercial launch. From 2018 onward, the company placed greater emphasis on commercial electrification. The Treo, Treo Yaari and later Treo Zor addressed passenger, rickshaw and cargo applications. Partnerships with Three Wheels United and Smart-E were intended to support financing and deployment of Treo vehicles. Mahindra's electric passenger-car strategy subsequently broadened through Mahindra-branded SUVs, including the XUV400, XEV 9e and BE 6. In 2023, the operating entity was renamed Mahindra Last Mile Mobility Limited after its complete merger with Mahindra & Mahindra. The Last Mile Mobility marque is associated mainly with electric commercial vehicles, while Mahindra's passenger-car brands carry the newer electric SUV products.
