Overview

Maga Animation Studio is an Italian animation and production company founded in Milan in 1996 by Massimo Carrier Ragazzi, with its studio now based in Monza. The name derives from the Italian word "maga," meaning sorceress, a nod to the craft of turning blank pages into living worlds. Since its founding, the studio has focused on bringing high-end, expressive animation to the international market, blending traditional artistic roots with a global perspective. Over the years, Maga's identity has evolved from a pure animation studio into a full-service production company and today an agile, "pocket-sized" media company. Its work spans animated series, feature films, video games, advertising and music, supported by continuous internal R&D and real-time pipelines. While renowned for high-end CG animation, the studio's foundation lies in traditional craft, combining 2D digital art, traditional drawing and hybrid techniques. Maga emphasizes intentional artistry, genuine choreography and human-driven character performance, positioning technology as a tool to empower rather than replace human imagination. The studio has collaborated with major international players including Disney, Ubisoft, Rai Fiction, France Télévision, Hasbro and others. Notable projects include character animation for the Super Mario world in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle (2017), the animated series Acqua in bocca (2007), PsicoVip (2009) created by Bruno Bozzetto, and Extreme Football (2014) inspired by Stefano Benni's novel. More recent work includes Terminator Survivors for Nacon, Bradley The Badger for Day 4 Night Studios, Soulstice for Reply Game Studios, and The Lupins Tales with Xilam and Alibaba Cultural Media. The studio also produces its own properties such as NORA ノラ and ZOR4. Maga Animation Studio remains privately held and active, with a team of artists at its core. It has received awards and mentions at international festivals including Annecy and Promax, and continues to experiment with new visual languages and real-time engine output.

History

Maga Animation Studio was founded in Milan in 1996 by Massimo Carrier Ragazzi. The name comes from the Italian word "maga" (sorceress), reflecting the studio's mission to transform blank pages into living worlds. From the outset, the studio dedicated itself to high-end, expressive animation for the international market, combining traditional artistic roots with a global perspective. In its early years, Maga produced animated series such as The Olympig "Skeleton" (2006) and Acqua in bocca (2007), a 52-episode 3D animated series that aired on Rai 2. In 2009, the studio produced PsicoVip, a 26-episode 3D animated series created by Bruno Bozzetto, inspired by his 1968 feature film Vip mio fratello superuomo. This period established Maga as a notable Italian animation studio working with major broadcasters. In 2014, Maga produced Extreme Football, a 39-episode animated series freely inspired by Stefano Benni's novel La Compagnia dei Celestini, in collaboration with Tele Images Productions, Rai Fiction and France Télévision. The series aired on Rai 2. A follow-up, Extreme Football Tricks, was released in 2019. The studio also worked on Ricky Zoom, a British-French-Chinese animated series produced by Hasbro's Entertainment One, which premiered in Italy on Rai Yoyo on 30 September 2019. A significant milestone came in 2017 when Maga animated the characters of the Super Mario world for Ubisoft's triple-A game Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, producing several cinematics and the launch trailer animations. This collaboration with a major international game publisher highlighted the studio's growing reputation in video game animation. The studio also collaborated with Disney on character animation for advertising, TV promotions and series. In 2018, Maga produced the documentary Gualtiero Marchesi: The Great Italian, about the renowned Italian chef. The studio has also worked on projects such as Terminator Survivors for Nacon, Bradley The Badger for Day 4 Night Studios, Soulstice for Reply Game Studios, and The Lupins Tales with Xilam and Alibaba Cultural Media Co. Ltd. It has developed its own properties including NORA ノラ and ZOR4, and collaborated on Talent Explorers with Sony Music Latin Iberia and FC Barcelona. Over the years, Maga has evolved from an animation studio into a full-service production company and today an agile, "pocket-sized" media company. It maintains a balance between production and constant artistic research, with end-to-end services across animated series, feature films, video games, advertising and music, supported by internal R&D and real-time pipelines. The studio has received awards and mentions at major animation events and international festivals, including Annecy and Promax. It also collaborates with the Scuola Nazionale di Cinema - Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, Lombardy branch, for training.
