Neil Lapping, Chief Adventure Officer, launched the company after a 2003 hiking trip in Scotland, initially offering guided and self-guided walking holidays in Scotland before evolving to organise self-guided trips around the world.

Macs Adventure was launched by Neil Lapping, who in 2003 was hiking in Scotland and saw a large bus arrive in Ullapool, a small town on the northwest coast of the Highlands. He observed that passengers took photos, interacted with no one, and left, and thought this could not be the best way for people to explore a region and make a positive impact on local communities. He decided to launch a range of guided and self-guided walking holidays in Scotland, aiming to create a more active way to explore that immersed and connected visitors to the place and the people who lived there. Macs Adventure was thus born. Since then, the company has evolved its offering and now organises self-guided trips around the world.
