History
The Maclellan Foundation describes itself as having 80 years of stewardship and a legacy of impact. Its history page states that over 150 years ago Thomas Maclellan wove his legacy and covenant into the foundation. Thomas Maclellan was born in 1837 in Castle Douglas, Scotland, to John Maclellan, and entered the banking world with the Bank of Scotland before moving to Canada, where he managed a bank branch in Saint John, New Brunswick. In 1857, in the Scottish town of Blairgowrie, he made a covenant with God. In 1892, after a three-year stay in Topeka, Kansas and thirty years in Nova Scotia, Canada, he immigrated to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he invested in the then five-year-old Provident Insurance Company, which served at-risk saw mill and coal mining workers. In 1910, Provident went public, raising $150,000 in capital by converting from a mutual assessment company to a stock company, and Thomas Maclellan became its President at the age of 73.
