Maclays Brewery is a historic Scottish brewing name originating in Alloa, Clackmannanshire. James Maclay established the business in 1830 as James Maclay, Ale, Porter, Table and India Beer Brewer of Alloa. The enterprise became associated with traditional Scottish ales and, from 1870, operated from the Thistle Brewery, a purpose-built site that remained the home of Maclay-branded ales for most of the following century. The brewery’s products developed a reputation beyond Scotland, receiving medals at brewing exhibitions in Vienna in 1894, Newcastle in 1898 and Paris in 1900. After James Maclay’s death in 1875, his sons James and John continued the business. The Fraser family, licensed grocers and spirit merchants from Dunfermline, acquired the company in December 1896. It was subsequently incorporated as Maclay & Company, Limited. The business retained its identity as a family-associated Scottish brewer while building a portfolio centered on ales, porters, table beers and India beers. One of its best-known traditional products was Oat Malt Stout. The company encountered difficulties during the late twentieth century as consumer preferences moved away from dark beers and toward other beer styles. In 2001, Maclays stopped using the brewery buildings as its office base. The main site was subsequently demolished and redeveloped, although part of the historic structure survived as The Old Brewery pub, later owned by Belhaven. Maclays increasingly combined brewing heritage with pub operation. On 10 March 1994, the corporate name changed to Maclay Inns Limited, reflecting the company’s changing business model. It acquired the Clockwork Beer Company in Glasgow, which became the practical brewing base for Maclays products and produced both Clockwork beers and beers made to Maclays recipes. This arrangement allowed the brand to continue after brewing had ceased at the original Alloa premises. Tennent Caledonian acquired a substantial minority shareholding in 2012. Financial pressure later intensified, and on 23 January 2015 Maclay Inns entered administration after failing to secure a strategic solution. EY operated the business during the administration process while attempting to find a purchaser. Reports indicated that the company’s 15 pubs were trading profitably. In June 2015, Stonegate Pub Company acquired the Maclays-owned pubs from administration. The Maclays name remains in use as a beer brand. Production is carried out under licence by Belhaven Brewery in Scotland and by Sleeman Breweries in Canada. The modern brand is therefore distinct from the original independent brewery: its identity rests on historic Scottish recipes and the Alloa brewing tradition, while its current beers are made by other breweries.
