Overview
Mackprang was a German trading house founded in November 1878 in Flensburg as the grain trading company C. Mackprang jr. Its core business was agricultural commodity trading, with a focus on maritime trade in the German-Danish Baltic Sea region, and it also imported American grain. In 1921 the company moved its headquarters to Hamburg, where the import of Russian barley became an important pillar of its business. In 1935 it acquired a compound feed plant, adding feed production to its trading activities. Over the following decades Mackprang diversified. Through a holding company it became active in automotive components, acquiring an initial stake in Schlemmer GmbH in Munich in 1963 and taking full ownership in 1979. Between 1984 and 2000 it acquired several logistics service providers — Süderelbe Logistik GmbH, CM Eurologistik GmbH and UNISPED Logistik GmbH — which were sold in 2012. In 2012 Hannover Finanz became the majority shareholder of the holding, and in 2016 the Schlemmer Group was taken over by the investor 3i Group P. In March 2018 Mackprang filed for insolvency. The company was liquidated and removed from the commercial register on 7 November 2018, ending its 140-year history.
