Overview
Macierz Ziemi Cieszyńskiej (originally Macierz Szkolna dla Księstwa Cieszyńskiego, later Macierz Szkolna Ziemi Cieszyńskiej) is one of the oldest Polish patriotic organizations in Cieszyn Silesia, founded on 9 November 1885. Its mission was to support and develop Polish education and to maintain Polish national spirit among the Polish inhabitants of the Cieszyn region. The first president was Paweł Stalmach. As of 2022, the twentieth president of the Main Board is Dr. Cezary Tomiczek (born 1975 in Cieszyn), a teacher, academic lecturer, manager, social activist, and volunteer. The organization emerged in response to the Germanization pressures in the Habsburg monarchy, where German was the dominant language of administration and secondary education. Polish activists centered around the "Czytelnia Ludowa" (People's Reading Room) in Cieszyn drafted a statute whose goal was "the establishment, maintenance, and support of secondary, vocational, and folk schools, as well as kindergartens with Polish as the language of instruction." The organization began its activities in the Duchy of Cieszyn on 18 December 1886 with its first general assembly. Throughout its history, Macierz Ziemi Cieszyńskiej founded and supported numerous Polish schools, kindergartens, and educational institutions, first in Cieszyn and later in the coal-mining region around Ostrava, including schools in Polska Ostrawa, Michałkowice, Dziećmorowice, Lutynia Niemiecka, Bogumin, Gruszów, and elsewhere. It also established the Polish Gymnasium in Cieszyn in 1895 and a folk school in 1899. The organization relied on donations from Polish communities both within and beyond Austria-Hungary, including notable benefactors such as Henryk Sienkiewicz and Antoni Osuchowski. Today, Macierz Ziemi Cieszyńskiej continues to operate as a cultural and educational association based in Cieszyn, Poland, promoting Polish heritage, language, and education in the region. Its website is www.macierz.cieszyn.pl.
History
Macierz Ziemi Cieszyńskiej was founded on 9 November 1885 as Macierz Szkolna dla Księstwa Cieszyńskiego (Educational Society for the Duchy of Cieszyn), later renamed Macierz Szkolna Ziemi Cieszyńskiej after 1918. It is one of the oldest Polish patriotic organizations in Cieszyn Silesia. Its founders were Polish activists associated with the "Czytelnia Ludowa" in Cieszyn: Paweł Stalmach, Rev. Ignacy Świeży, Dr. Jan Fiszer, Andrzej Kotula, Dr. Jan Michejda, Dr. Joachim Kleinberg, Andrzej Bardoń, Rev. Jan Sikora, Rev. Antoni Fuzoń, Franciszek Halfar of Poręba, Jan Sztwiertnia of Kisielów, and Alfred Brzeski. They drafted a statute whose stated goal was "the establishment, maintenance, and support of secondary, vocational, and folk schools, as well as kindergartens with Polish as the language of instruction." The organization held its first general assembly on 18 December 1886 in the Duchy of Cieszyn. In his inaugural speech, Paweł Stalmach said: "Every beginning is difficult, and in our Silesia exceptional circumstances make it even harder for the Polish people to undertake any national work, especially one such as a Polish school of a higher kind." From the outset, Macierz aimed to cultivate Polish identity in Cieszyn Silesia. The first period of activity focused on fundraising for statutory activities. This was difficult because Poles in Silesia mostly belonged to lower social strata, with limited access to education and positions, which were usually held by privileged Germans. At the first meeting, participants collected 5 crowns among themselves, which started the organizational funds. They also issued an appeal for donations, to which not only Silesians but also Poles from outside Austria-Hungary responded. According to Stalmach, the largest financial contributions came from the Kingdom of Poland. Ignacy Bagieński of Odessa donated 10,000 rubles; the Polish Library Society in Romania gave 4,500 Romanian francs (1,711 zlotys); Piotr Kmita of Warsaw bequeathed half his estate, worth 25,000 rubles. Benefactors also included the famous Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz and lawyer Antoni Osuchowski. The first educational institution established was the Polish Gymnasium in Cieszyn in 1895. It was supported by, among others, philanthropist and welding pioneer Stanisław Olszewski. A few years later, in 1899, a folk school was founded in Cieszyn. Maintaining both institutions consumed all of Macierz's funds until 1903, when the gymnasium was taken over by the state. In 1903, Macierz expanded its activities to the coal-mining region. The chairman of the board at that time was Rev. Józef Londzin. In 1904, a folk school in Polska Ostrawa, a kindergarten in Michałkowice, and supplementary courses for girls in Cieszyn were established; in 1905, folk schools in Dziećmorowice and Lutynia Niemiecka, a kindergarten in Dąbrowa, and the Bursa Macierzy in Cieszyn. In 1906/07, a folk school in Bogumin, a kindergarten in Rychwałd, and a kindergarten in Polska Ostrawa were founded; in 1908, a folk school in Gruszów, a kindergarten in Bogumin, a kindergarten in Cieszyn, and a second kindergarten in Polska Ostrawa. In 1909, Macierz, together with the Towarzystwo Szkoły Ludowej, initiated the establishment of a real gymnasium in Orłowa and the first wydziałowa school in Cieszyn. The organization continued its educational and cultural activities through the 20th century, adapting to changing political circumstances. After World War II and the division of Cieszyn Silesia between Poland and Czechoslovakia, Macierz Ziemi Cieszyńskiej focused its activities on the Polish side, based in Cieszyn. It remains active today as a cultural and educational association, promoting Polish heritage and education in the region. As of 2022, its president is Dr. Cezary Tomiczek.
