Overview
Macarthur Disability Services (MDS) is an Australian not-for-profit community organisation that has operated for over four decades, providing services, activities and connections to people with a disability, mental illness, the aged, families and carers. Formed in 1982 following the International Year of Disabled Persons in 1981, MDS was established by several Macarthur residents who believed more needed to be done to enable people with a disability to actively engage with their community. They envisioned a world where people with a disability participated fully in society and were valued and empowered to realise their potential. MDS is a registered service provider under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), meaning participants can use NDIS funding to access its services, activities and supports. The organisation also offers a fee-for-service model for people who do not currently have an NDIS plan or adequate funding and wish to purchase additional supports. Its services are designed to meet the needs of each individual, with a focus on the person achieving their aspirations and support tailored to their needs and unique circumstances, fostering independence. MDS delivers a broad range of NDIS services including Allied Health, Behaviour Intervention Support Services, Community Inclusion & Support, Individualised Services, Living and Life Skills, MDS Club, Pathways to Employment, Short Term Accommodation, Social Groups and Support Coordination. It also provides non-NDIS services such as CHSP Sector Support and Development. A workplace-based training program called Livelihood supports people with disabilities to gain employment skills to reach their open employment goals, and a new Ingleburn hub has opened. MDS also operates an NDIS Navigator and Plan Support Officer service to help participants understand their NDIS journey. The organisation puts people with disability at the centre of decision making, through the principles of reasonable and necessary supports and individual choice and control. Its skilled and professional staff take a person-centred approach, listening to participants' requests, desires and needs. MDS is continually identifying and developing innovative services and activities based on emerging trends and strengthening partnerships to enhance service delivery and achieve participant goals. It is registered with NDIS Provider Number 405 000 1355 and ABN 98003008928.
History
Macarthur Disability Services was formed in 1982, following the International Year of Disabled Persons in 1981. It was established because of recognition by several Macarthur residents that felt more needed to be done to enable people with a disability to actively engage with their community. They envisioned a world where people with a disability participated fully in society and were valued and empowered to realise their potential. From humble beginnings, the organisation has grown to over three decades of service delivery experience. As of its official website, MDS has been operating for over 42 years and, in a later statement, 43 years, indicating continued operation into the 2020s. The organisation is a registered NDIS service provider and also offers fee-for-service supports. It has opened a new Ingleburn hub and runs a workplace-based training program called Livelihood.
