Overview

Mürztaler Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (MVG), formally Mürztaler Verkehrs-GmbH, is a bus transport company headquartered in Kapfenberg, Styria, Austria. It is one of the largest transport operators in Styria and the leading bus line operator in the region around Mariazell, Kapfenberg, Bruck an der Mur and Leoben, an area home to roughly 100,000 people. The company was founded on 23 April 1943 with financial support from the Böhler company. From 20 October 1944 to 15 February 2002 it also operated the Kapfenberg trolleybus system; since then it has been a pure omnibus company. MVG's business is divided into three areas: local public transport (Nahverkehr), a travel agency (Reisebüro), and group travel (Gesellschaftsreisen) using its own coach fleet. The travel agency, operated since 1958, focuses on so-called Eigenveranstaltungen — group trips to destinations across Europe using the company's own buses and tour guides. The company's website lists services including scheduled services (Linienverkehr), accompanied trips, day excursions, the travel agency and travel coaches. In 2002 MVG acquired Obersteirische Kraftwagen-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (OKVG), and in 2005 it took over Postbus lines around Mariazell from ÖBB-Postbus GmbH, operated as MVG-Regional-Busbetrieb GmbH. Another subsidiary, MVG Spanner Reisen GmbH, was founded on 1 January 2007. For reasons of EU law, all three subsidiaries have since been merged into Mürztaler Verkehrsgesellschaft m.b.H. On 14 December 2015 MVG took over lines 185 and 186 in the municipality of Sankt Barbara im Mürztal from the Graz bus company Watzke GmbH & Co KG, operating them until July 2021. To meet EU requirements, public transport in the MVG area was reorganised in July 2021. Five towns and nine municipalities jointly founded 4takt Verkehrs GmbH as the contracting authority for MVG; the city of Kapfenberg holds the largest share at 77% and remains the sole owner of MVG, giving it direct control over both companies. MVG's operating area changed in July 2021: lines in the middle and upper Mürztal were given up, while lines 171 (Bruck an der Mur – Kapfenberg – Turnau) and 175 (Bruck an der Mur – Tragöss / Grüner See) were added. Since July 2022 MVG has also operated line 810 (Leoben – Bruck an der Mur). Regional bus lines in the MVG area are largely financed by the Province of Styria through the Styrian Transport Association (Steirischer Verkehrsverbund) and billed via 4takt Verkehrs GmbH. Because MVG has a so-called net contract, responsibility and risk for passenger revenue rest solely with MVG; this also applies to city transport, which is partly co-financed by the towns of Kapfenberg, Bruck an der Mur and Trofaiach. Under the quality rules of the Styrian Transport Association, regional services must use low-entry buses with coach seats, while pure city services generally use fully low-floor buses. In addition to diesel standard buses meeting the Euro 6 emission standard, battery-electric city buses have been in use since January 2019. All city bus lines in Kapfenberg, Bruck an der Mur, Leoben, Trofaiach and Mariazell were to be fully converted to battery buses by 2024. The coach fleet was considerably reduced during the pandemic years of 2020/2021.
