Overview
Meguin is a German lubricant brand with roots dating back to 1847, when Gustav Meguin founded a company in Fraulautern that initially produced resins and pitches, later expanding into oils and greases. Over the decades the company evolved through various legal forms and names, becoming a significant producer of mineral oils and technical lubricants for the steel industry and the emerging automotive sector. In 2006 the Ulm-based additive specialist Liqui Moly acquired the company, and since the Würth Group's takeover of the Liqui Moly Group at the turn of 2017/18, Meguin has been part of that larger corporate family. In 2026 the operating entity was renamed Liqui Moly Produktions GmbH & Co. KG, but the Meguin brand continues to be marketed. Today Meguin offers a broad portfolio of over 1,000 products, including motor oils, gear oils, greases, pastes, repair aids and workshop service products. The brand emphasises German quality, in-house development and production, and close customer partnerships, offering customised formulations and production solutions. Its products are used in automotive, industrial and workshop applications, and the production company also supplies other companies in the mineral oil industry, trade and manufacturing. Meguin maintains a strong presence in Germany and serves international markets, leveraging the distribution and technical expertise of the Liqui Moly Group.
History
Meguin was founded in 1847 by Gustav Meguin, initially producing resins and pitches, followed by hoof greases, linseed oils and wagon lubricants. The company operated as G. Meguin, based in Fraulautern, and in 1866 a branch in Mannheim was entered into the commercial register. In 1873, against the backdrop of low resin oil production in Germany, Meguin was recorded as producing 15,000 hundredweight of resin oil annually for machine lubrication, while also obtaining pinoline, pitch and other products. In 1890 the product range was expanded to include mineral oils, technical lubricants for the steel industry and greases for the emerging motorisation. In 1891 an open trading company was founded in Fraulautern with Franz and Gustav Meguin (son) as partners. Gustav Meguin left the company in 1893. In 1898, after the death of Gustav Meguin (son), the company passed to his three daughters under the guardianship of their mother Ella Meguin. The founder Gustav Meguin senior became active again and tried to find a commercial manager. In November 1908, G. Meguin, Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung was newly entered in the commercial register of the Saarlouis district court, converting the previous open trading company. The new company had been founded in March of that year. Eduard Klein and Franz Meguin were named as managing directors. Klein left in mid-1910, and shortly afterwards Franz Rauch was named managing director. At the end of 1913 the name was changed to Oelwerke G. Meguin G.m.b.H. and management passed from Rauch to Willy Burkhardt. In 1914 the business was characterised as a resin products factory, steam oil refinery and grease factory, producing medical, edible and essential oils, and medical, edible and cosmetic fats. Burkhardt left as managing director in 1916. Franz Meguin died in August 1918 and was at that time described as director of both Oelwerke G. Meguin and the Dillinger Fabrik gelochte Bleche Franz Meguin. Management of the Oelwerke was taken over by operations manager Eduard Thomann and businessman Michael Baston. After World War I, varnishes and similar products for the painting trade were also offered. In 1936 the company was named Öl- und Lackwerke G. Meguin G.m.b.H. After World War II, mineral oils and greases for the mining industry became an important product line. After several name changes, the company operated as Meguin GmbH from 1990. In 2006 the Ulm-based additive manufacturer Liqui Moly acquired the company, and Ernst Prost took over the management of Meguin. In 2011 the foundation stone was laid for a tank farm with a capacity of 18 million litres in the Saarlouis/Dillingen harbour, and from 2014 to 2017 there were investments in new laboratory rooms, ground tanks and a central recipe tank farm with matrix distribution, filling systems for canisters and drums, the installation of packing robots and a system-supported label warehouse. Since the takeover of the Liqui Moly Group by the Würth Group at the turn of 2017/18, the subsidiary Meguin has also been part of this group. In 2026 Meguin was renamed Liqui Moly Produktions GmbH & Co. KG. The production company supplies not only Liqui Moly but also a number of other companies in the mineral oil industry, mineral oil trade and industry. The Meguin brand continues to be maintained.
