Overview
Weyermann® Specialty Malts is the trading name of Malzfabrik Michael Weyermann GmbH & Co. KG, a German maltster and brewer headquartered in Bamberg, Bavaria. Founded in 1879 by the Bamberg grain merchant and boatman Johann Baptist Weyermann, the company has specialised for more than a century in the production of specialty malts for brewing. Its product range includes well-known malt varieties such as Carapils, Carafa and Caramünch, as well as the roasted, de-bittered colouring malt Sinamar, which is used both in beer and in food and beverages. The historic production complex on Memmelsdorfer Straße/Brennerstraße in Bamberg, built from 1888 to designs by master builder Gustav Haeberle, was classified as an industrial monument in 1973. The company remained focused on the German market for much of the 20th century. In 1985, Thomas Kraus-Weyermann and Sabine Weyermann took over management and opened the business to international distribution, developing a portfolio of around eighty different beer brands. Growth continued through acquisitions and infrastructure investment: in 2001 the pilsner malt producer Main Malz KG Meißner & Sohn in Hassfurt was acquired, in 2003 Weyermann became a founding member and co-owner of the MEG Malt Export group, and in 2005 a 15,000-tonne grain warehouse and logistics centre with automated bagging and palletising systems were built opposite the historic plant. Today Weyermann supplies specialty malts to brewers around the world and also operates a visitors' shop, the Weyermann Fan Shop, next to the brewery, selling its own beers and beers from other breweries that use Weyermann malt. The company has run a compensation distillery since 1997 and a closed distillery since 2015. It remains a privately held family business.
History
The company was founded in 1879 in Bamberg by the grain merchant and boatman Johann Baptist Weyermann (1853–1919). In 1905 his son Rudolf Weyermann joined the business. The firm concentrated on the production of specialty malts for beer brewing and developed varieties such as Carapils, Carafa and Caramünch. Specialty malt production took place in the building complex on Memmelsdorfer Straße/Brennerstraße in Bamberg from 1888, built to plans by master builder Gustav Haeberle. In 1973 the historic production building in Bamberg was classified as an industrial monument. In 1902 the company began producing Weyermann’sches Farbebier from its own roasted and coloured malts. The black roasted malt beer Sinamar — made without substitutes and de-bittered, its name meaning "sine amaro" or "without bitterness" — was produced from 1905 until the Second World War at the branch of the Farbbierbrauerei Johann Baptist Weyermann in Potsdam. Production in Bamberg later fell to the company Röstmalzbierbrauerei Heinz Weyermann GmbH. Sinamar is also used to colour beverages and foods. Since 2007 there has also been a product variant made according to Bioland guidelines. In 1985, when the brewery was focused solely on the domestic market, the couple Thomas Kraus-Weyermann and Sabine Weyermann took over management. They opened the company to international distribution and developed a portfolio of eighty different beer brands. In 2001 the company Main Malz KG Meißner & Sohn in Hassfurt, which produces pilsner malt, was acquired. In 2003 the Malzfabrik became a founding member and co-owner of the MEG Malt Export group. In 2005 a grain warehouse with a capacity of 15,000 tonnes and a logistics centre with automated bagging and palletising systems were built on the Bamberg production site opposite the historic plant complex. Weyermann has operated a compensation distillery since 1997 and a closed distillery since 2015. The Weyermann Fan Shop is a shop adjacent to the brewery that sells beers produced by Weyermann as well as many other brands from all countries that brew their beer with Weyermann malt.
