Overview
Luigi Pellegrini Editore is an Italian independent publishing house founded in 1952 in Cleto, in the Calabria region, by Luigi Pellegrini, a publicist and journalist. It is regarded as one of the earliest publishing houses to specialise in the cultural sector in Calabria. The company has been managed since 1982 by the founder's son, Walter Pellegrini, and since 2012 the founder's granddaughters, Marta and Sara, have joined the editorial management structure. The publisher's catalogue spans academic monographs, essays, regional history, literature, pedagogy, law and religion, and social inquiry. It is particularly noted for its periodicals and specialised series, including Il Letterato, Incontri Meridionali, Contenuti, Campi Immaginabili, Giornale di Storia Contemporanea, Letteratura & Società, Qualeducazione, Voci, Diritto e Religioni and Fata Morgana. These journals have attracted contributions from prominent Italian cultural and academic figures such as Alberto Moravia, Michele Prisco, Leonida Répaci, Mario Pomilio, Rosario Villari and many others. Over more than six decades the house has accumulated more than 2,500 publications. One of its best-known commercial successes is Fratelli di sangue, an investigative book on the 'ndrangheta written by magistrate Nicola Gratteri and journalist Antonio Nicaso, first published in 2006 in the Mafia series and later republished with further success by Mondadori. The publisher celebrated its seventieth anniversary in 2022, marking the occasion partly with a project to reissue the literary production of the Calabrian writer Leonida Repaci. Today Luigi Pellegrini Editore remains a family-run, independent publisher based in Cosenza, Calabria, with an active online catalogue and a continuing commitment to Southern Italian cultural and academic publishing.
History
Luigi Pellegrini Editore was founded in 1952 in Cleto, a small town in the province of Cosenza, Calabria, by Luigi Pellegrini, a publicist and journalist. It was among the first publishing houses to specialise in the cultural sector in Calabria. From its early years the house combined book publishing with periodicals, building a reputation for intellectual rigour and regional engagement. In 1982, management passed to the founder's son, Walter Pellegrini, who strengthened the periodicals division and specialised series. Under his direction the catalogue expanded to include journals such as Campi Immaginabili, Giornale di Storia Contemporanea, Letteratura & Società, Qualeducazione, Voci, Diritto e Religioni and Fata Morgana, attracting contributions from leading Italian academics and cultural figures. In 2012, the founder's granddaughters, Marta and Sara Pellegrini, joined the editorial management structure, ensuring continuity of family stewardship. Over its first 65 years the publisher accumulated more than 2,500 publications. A notable commercial and critical success came in 2006 with Fratelli di sangue, an investigative work on the 'ndrangheta by magistrate Nicola Gratteri and journalist Antonio Nicaso, published in the Mafia series and later republished by Mondadori. In 2022 the house celebrated its 70th anniversary, launching a project to reissue the literary production of Calabrian writer Leonida Repaci, a friend of the founder. The publisher remains based in Cosenza and continues to operate as an independent, family-run cultural publisher.
