Overview

Lucid Motors, legally Lucid Group, Inc., is an American electric-vehicle and automotive-technology company headquartered in Newark, California. The business began in 2007 as Atieva, a developer of batteries and electric powertrains intended primarily for vehicle manufacturers. It later evolved into a vehicle producer under the Lucid Motors name, with a strategy centered on highly efficient, long-range, premium electric vehicles. The company’s early work included battery-pack development for electric buses and other powertrain applications. Its technical profile was strengthened by the arrival of Peter Rawlinson, formerly a senior Tesla engineering executive associated with the Model S. Atieva adopted the Lucid Motors name in 2016 and presented its intention to develop a high-performance, long-range electric car. The first production vehicle, the Lucid Air luxury sedan, entered production at the company’s Casa Grande, Arizona, factory in September 2021, with customer deliveries beginning later that year. Lucid positions the Air against premium electric sedans from Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, BMW, and other established manufacturers. The model is marketed around aerodynamic efficiency, interior space, charging speed, software, and driving range. Several Air variants have been offered, including Pure, Touring, Grand Touring, and Dream Edition versions. The Air received major automotive recognition, including MotorTrend’s 2022 Car of the Year and the 2023 World Luxury Car award. Lucid expanded beyond sedans with the Gravity, a premium electric SUV unveiled in 2023 and entering production in December 2024. The Gravity is intended to broaden the company’s addressable market while retaining Lucid’s emphasis on range, performance, packaging, and technology. The company has also discussed lower-priced midsize vehicles and potential autonomous-vehicle applications. The Public Investment Fund, Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, became Lucid’s majority shareholder following a major investment completed in 2019. Lucid subsequently went public in July 2021 through a merger with Churchill Capital Corp IV, a special-purpose acquisition company. The company has continued to receive substantial funding from PIF-affiliated entities while investing in manufacturing capacity in Arizona and Saudi Arabia. In addition to selling vehicles, Lucid develops and supplies electric powertrain technology. In 2023 it entered an agreement with Aston Martin covering electric motors, powertrains, and battery systems for future vehicles. Lucid has also participated in Formula E battery programs and formed supply and technology relationships with companies including Panasonic Energy, LG Chem, Samsung SDI, Mobileye, Amazon, Electrify America, and Nuro. Its long-term identity therefore combines a luxury-vehicle brand with an engineering and powertrain-technology business.

History

Lucid was founded in 2007 as Atieva by Bernard Tse, Sam Weng, and Sheaupyng Lin. The original business concentrated on lithium-ion battery packs and electric powertrains for other manufacturers rather than on selling complete vehicles. In 2011, Atieva began work with Lishen on battery systems for electric buses in China. The company attracted investment from several financial and strategic backers, and Beijing Automotive Industry Holding acquired a minority stake in 2014. Peter Rawlinson joined Atieva in 2013 as chief technology officer and a board member. His previous engineering experience at Tesla helped support the company’s transition from a component supplier toward a complete-vehicle manufacturer. In October 2016, Atieva adopted the Lucid Motors name and publicly outlined plans for a long-range, high-performance electric vehicle. The company presented an early Lucid Air prototype in December of that year. Lucid’s manufacturing ambitions took shape in Arizona. In 2016, the company announced plans for a large plant in Casa Grande, and construction of the facility began in late 2019 after the company secured major financing. The first phase of the factory was completed in December 2020. Lucid described the planned multi-phase site as capable of substantial future expansion, although actual production remained far below the facility’s ultimate theoretical capacity during the company’s early years. The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia became Lucid’s majority shareholder after an investment announced in 2018 and completed in April 2019. The funding supported final engineering and testing of the Air, factory construction, and the development of a global retail and service network. Rawlinson became chief executive officer in April 2019 while retaining the technology leadership role. Lucid agreed in February 2021 to combine with Churchill Capital Corp IV in a transaction valued by the parties at approximately $11.75 billion. The merger closed in July 2021, creating the publicly traded Lucid Group, Inc. and giving the company the LCID ticker. The Air entered production in September 2021 and deliveries began in late October. Lucid’s early production was constrained by supply-chain and manufacturing-ramp challenges: the company produced 7,180 vehicles in 2022 and 8,428 in 2023. The Air established Lucid’s brand identity. Its variants emphasized different balances of price, range, luxury, and performance, while the company promoted the vehicle’s high-voltage architecture and aerodynamic efficiency. The Air achieved an EPA-rated range of up to 520 miles for a specified configuration and received prominent industry awards. Lucid later introduced dark-trim styling and continued revising the model range. Lucid broadened its product strategy with the Gravity SUV. The concept was previewed in 2020, formally unveiled in 2023, and began production in December 2024. The Gravity uses a dual-motor electric architecture and targets customers seeking greater passenger and cargo capacity than a sedan can provide. Lucid also established manufacturing plans in Saudi Arabia, including local final assembly for the domestic market. The company has maintained a technology-supply business alongside its own vehicles. It supplied battery packs for several generations of Formula E race cars and entered a 2023 agreement with Aston Martin to provide electric powertrain and battery expertise. Battery relationships have included LG Chem and Panasonic Energy, while Lucid has worked with Mobileye on driver assistance, Amazon on Alexa integration, and Electrify America on public charging access. In late 2023, Lucid announced plans to adopt the North American Charging System for its vehicles. Lucid’s later strategy has included lower-priced midsize vehicles and possible autonomous mobility applications. The company announced a partnership with Uber and Nuro to deploy modified Gravity vehicles as autonomous ride-hailing vehicles, subject to development and regulatory conditions. Lucid remains an active, publicly traded electric-vehicle manufacturer whose future depends on production scaling, funding, product expansion, and the commercialization of its powertrain technology.
