Overview

LTS Lohmann Therapy Systems (LTS Lohmann Therapie-Systeme) is a German contract development and manufacturing organisation (CDMO) headquartered in Andernach, Germany. Founded in 1984 as a subsidiary of the Lohmann Group, the company has grown into a global partner for pharmaceutical firms seeking innovative drug delivery systems. LTS operates as a business-to-business enterprise: it does not market finished medicines under its own consumer brand, but instead develops and manufactures drug delivery products that its pharmaceutical partners sell under their own labels. The company's core technologies include transdermal therapeutic systems (TTS, commonly known as drug patches), oral thin films (OTF), micro array patches (MAP), on-body delivery systems (OBDS), topical patch systems and nasal drug delivery. These platforms are used across a wide range of therapeutic areas, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, pain management, hormone therapy and smoking cessation. LTS describes its purpose as creating new therapeutic opportunities, maximising partner value and improving patient outcomes. LTS has expanded significantly through acquisitions and organic growth. It operates facilities in Europe, North America and Asia, with major sites in Andernach (Germany), West Caldwell (USA), St. Paul (USA), Lakewood (USA), Netanya (Israel) and a business development office in Shanghai. The company employs more than 2,000 people and has a production capacity of approximately 2.6 billion units. It owns around 200 patent families. Recent milestones include the 2025 acquisition of Renaissance Lakewood, a US specialist in nasal sprays and sterile dosage forms, and the 2023 acquisition of Sorrel Wearable Injection Devices from Eitan Medical (Israel), which led to the creation of LTS Device Technologies. In 2024, LTS launched Udenyca ONBODY, the first on-body delivery device for a biosimilar, in the USA. The company remains privately held and is part of the LTS Group, which also includes IIS Innovative Injektions-Systeme GmbH & Co. KG.

History

LTS Lohmann Therapie-Systeme was founded in 1984 in Neuwied, Germany, as a subsidiary of the Lohmann Group, under the legal name LTS Lohmann Therapie-Systeme GmbH & Co. KG. The company was established to develop and manufacture transdermal therapeutic systems (TTS) and oral thin films (OTF) for the pharmaceutical industry. Ten years after its founding, in 1994, LTS moved its headquarters to Andernach, where it still operates its largest production facility, research and development unit, and corporate headquarters. The Andernach site features a 23,000 m² production area and a 14,000-pallet warehouse, with a capacity to produce over one billion units per year. In 1993, LTS established its first North American subsidiary, LTS Corporation, based in West Caldwell, New Jersey. This site, acquired in 1994 according to the company's location page, expanded LTS's production capabilities to North America and specialises in high-potency APIs. It has a 10,200 m² production area and a 3,000-pallet warehouse, also capable of producing over one billion units per year. In 1999, LTS was converted into a non-listed stock corporation (Aktiengesellschaft), reflecting its growth and structural evolution. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, LTS continued to expand its technological portfolio and manufacturing footprint. In 2012, the company launched an ondansetron OTF for the treatment and prophylaxis of acute nausea and vomiting induced by moderately emetogenic chemotherapy. In 2014, LTS manufactured the first OTF for the treatment of breakthrough pain in chronic cancer pain. In 2018, the first therapeutic equivalent generic version of Suboxone® sublingual film was launched in the United States by LTS's partner Dr. Reddy's; the product is a buprenorphine and naloxone sublingual film indicated for the treatment of opioid use disorder. In 2019, LTS's manufacturer's authorisation was extended to include the manufacturing of capsules. In 2021, LTS introduced a buprenorphine patch transdermal system for pain therapy, first launched in Europe and later in the USA and Japan. In 2022, LTS acquired Tapemark Inc. in St. Paul, Minnesota, enhancing its production capabilities and adding research and development capacities in North America. The St. Paul facility has a 2,500 m² production area and a 1,500-pallet warehouse, with a capacity of over 300 million units per year. In 2023, LTS acquired Sorrel Wearable Injection Devices from Eitan Medical (Israel) and established LTS Device Technologies, focused on innovative on-body delivery systems. The Netanya facility, acquired in 2023, is LTS's first drug-device facility, specialising in large volume and highly viscous formulations, with a 500 m² production area and a capacity of over 3 million devices per year. In 2024, LTS launched Udenyca® ONBODY™ (pegfilgrastim-cbqv) in the USA, the first on-body delivery device for a biosimilar. In 2025, LTS acquired Renaissance Lakewood, a US specialist for nasal sprays and sterile dosage forms, adding about 500 employees to the LTS network and expanding its CDMO capabilities. The Lakewood facility has a 7,000 m² production area and a 7,500-pallet warehouse, with a capacity of over 100 million units per year, and specialises in nasal spray and aseptic manufacturing, including controlled substances (DEA Schedule I-V products). Today, LTS operates facilities across Europe, North America, and Asia, with a business development office in Shanghai, China, founded to pursue Rx and commercial partnerships throughout East Asia. The company employs more than 2,000 people and has a production capacity of approximately 2.6 billion units. It owns around 200 patent families. LTS remains a privately held company within the LTS Group, which also includes IIS Innovative Injektions-Systeme GmbH & Co. KG. The company's purpose is to create new therapeutic opportunities, maximise partner value, and improve patient outcomes.
