Overview

Longford Parish Council is the local government body for the civil parish of Longford in Gloucestershire, England. Longford lies close to Gloucester city centre but is administered within the Borough of Tewkesbury rather than Gloucester City. The parish is primarily residential and includes or is associated with facilities such as Longford Park Primary Academy, Longford Village Hall, Oxstalls Sports Park and Tennis Centre, Plock Court, and local football clubs. The A38 passes through the settlement and connects with the A40 at Longford roundabout, while a segregated cycle route links the area with Gloucester. The council represents the parish at the most local level of England's local-government system. Its responsibilities are distinct from those of the Borough of Tewkesbury and Gloucestershire County Council, which provide services at higher tiers. The available reference material identifies the council's chairperson as Councillor Christina Young, but does not provide a complete list of councillors, officers, committee structures, budgets, or service contracts. Longford's civic setting reflects the area's development from a historic settlement on a causeway between watercourses and low-lying meadows into a suburban community serving the wider Gloucester area. A civil parish was created in 1855. The village experienced substantial residential growth during the twentieth century as housing was built for people working in Gloucester. In the twenty-first century, nearby investment has included the development of Longford Park Primary Academy and the redevelopment of Plock Court and the University of Gloucestershire's Oxstalls campus. The council's public role is therefore centred on parish representation, local consultation, community affairs, and the consideration of local environmental, planning, transport, recreation, and amenity issues. The supplied sources do not establish a commercial brand portfolio, products, revenue, corporate ownership, or international operations. It is best understood as a public local authority rather than a consumer or corporate brand.

History

Longford is a settlement and civil parish in Gloucestershire, England, situated approximately two kilometres north-northeast of Gloucester Cross. Although it is close to Gloucester and has strong transport and social links with the city, the parish falls within the administrative area of the Borough of Tewkesbury. Longford Parish Council provides the parish-level tier of local representation. The name Longford is associated with the historic crossing over watercourses and meadows along the route that became Tewkesbury Road. Evidence of habitation exists from at least the early thirteenth century. Plock Court, east of the road, occupied the site of a medieval manor house, while a small early settlement developed near the southern end of the causeway. Historic assessments recorded residents in the fourteenth century and a number of houses in the seventeenth century, indicating that Longford was an established rural community well before modern suburban expansion. During the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the area contained farmhouses, substantial residences, market-gardening activity, and estate properties. Longford Court was rebuilt in the late eighteenth century, and Longford Lodge became associated with an estate inherited by the Hyett family. Other historic properties included Manor Farm and Pleasure Farm. The Queen's Head Inn was operating by 1851. In 1801, the combined parishes of Longford St Catherine and Longford St Mary contained 36 houses and 166 inhabitants. Longford's ecclesiastical and charitable history also influenced the locality. In the 1860s, a home operated by the Sisters of St Lucy was established near the site now associated with Gambier Parry Gardens. A children's hospital opened next to the home in 1867 with 22 beds, supported by subscriptions, donations, and the efforts of Thomas Gambier Parry. The nursing work later passed to the Sisters of St John the Baptist from Clewer. Other buildings in the area were subsequently used as convalescent, maternity, and children's-home facilities. A civil parish of Longford was created in 1855. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries brought gradual changes to the settlement, including the decline of some agricultural uses and the conversion or removal of individual farm properties. The most substantial transformation came during the twentieth century, when residential development expanded to house people working in Gloucester. This changed Longford from a mainly rural settlement into a largely suburban community. The modern parish contains housing, schools, sports venues, community facilities, and important road links. Longford Park Primary Academy and nursery opened in 2017. Between 2017 and 2022, Plock Court and the nearby Oxstalls campus underwent major improvements, including sports facilities, a business school, a growth hub, new pitches, landscaping, and improved public access. Oxstalls Sports Park includes tennis facilities, while Longford AFC and Gala Wilton Football Club are among the local sporting organisations. The area has also faced environmental and infrastructure pressures. Longford was severely affected by the July 2007 floods, which inundated many homes and damaged local businesses. Transport is shaped by the A38, which runs through the settlement and connects southward with the A40. A segregated cycle path provides a connection to Gloucester. Within this changing local context, Longford Parish Council serves as the parish's democratic voice. Publicly available material supplied for this entry identifies Councillor Christina Young as chairperson, but does not provide enough information to document the council's full institutional history, elections, finances, staffing, or individual policy decisions.
