Lombard Memorial Mission Hospital

Lombard Memorial Mission Hospital (also known as Lombard Memorial Hospital or CSI Lombard Memorial Hospital) is a multi-specialty hospital in Udupi, Karnataka, India. It was founded by Dr. Evangeline Louise Lombard, who arrived in Udupi in 1923. The hospital states it has provided professional service since 1923 and aims to be the best hospital in Udupi providing high quality care at affordable rates. Its mission is to show forth the love of God as manifested in Jesus Christ by ministering to the sick, regardless of caste and creed. The hospital offers a wide range of specialties and services including critical care and a 24/7 ambulance service.

Dr. Evangeline Louise Lombard was born in Geneva in 1890. Her father, a bank manager, gave up his job to become an evangelist, and her mother worked among women prisoners. From the age of fourteen, Eva was sure that she wanted to pursue a career in medicine. She graduated from the University of Geneva in 1918 and worked for a couple of years in Basel and Geneva. In 1921, she travelled to Mysore and spent a year at the Mission Hospital there, getting acquainted with various tropical diseases and learning the local customs and language. In 1923, she came to Udupi. Under her care and guidance, the hospital grew over the years into a multi-specialty hospital with 200 beds and a nursing school. The hospital had to rely on subsidies from the Basel Mission in Switzerland. In 1952, a sanatorium was built for TB patients. Outreach work was started simultaneously.
