Overview
Lodge under Bogatin (Slovene: Koča pod Bogatinom) is a mountain lodge situated on the Na Kraju alpine pasture in the Bohinj region of Slovenia, at an elevation of 1,513 metres. It stands in a broad basin that occupies a central position on the route between Spodnja Komna and Lepa Komna, making it a key stopping point for hikers traversing the Julian Alps. The lodge was built by the Bohinj branch of the Slovenian Mountaineering Society (SPD) on the foundations of a former Austrian military hospital that treated wounded soldiers during the First World War battles on Krn. It opened on 7 August 1932. A pyramid of natural stone blocks stands on a hill beside the lodge as a memorial to the soldiers buried there. After the Second World War, the lodge was taken over by the PD Bohinj-Srednja vas mountaineering society, which renovated it and reopened it in early March 1947. Electricity was installed in 1951, and in 1959 the lodge was renovated and its capacity expanded. Further renovations followed, with better equipment gradually installed, and a thorough renovation took place in 1981. In 1991 and 1992 the lodge was again renovated and its interior furnishings improved. The lodge is open roughly from mid-June to the end of September, and in winter from the Christmas and New Year holidays (with the option of New Year's Eve celebrations) until the end of March. Its dining area seats 50 people and includes a bar counter. Accommodation is provided in 10 rooms with 38 beds, plus 14 places in shared dormitories. Facilities include toilets, a washroom with hot and cold water, and a shower. The dining area has a traditional farmhouse stove, and the sleeping quarters are centrally heated. Water is supplied from a cistern and electricity is available. The lodge is categorised as category 1. The lodge is managed by the Planinsko društvo Srednja vas v Bohinju (Bohinj-Srednja vas Mountaineering Society), which maintains the official website and provides contact details for reservations and inquiries. It serves as a base for hikes to nearby peaks including Bogatin (1,977 m), Mahavšček (2,008 m), and Krn (2,245 m), and is accessible from Dom na Komni (15 minutes), the Savica lodge (2 hours 45 minutes), and other points in the Julian Alps. The lodge is a member of the Slovenian Mountaineering Association (PZS) network of mountain huts.
