Overview
Lo & Sons designs bags and accessories described as smart, stylish essentials for modern life, with a focus on thoughtful features, sophisticated style, intentional design, and sustainable and socially conscious practices. The brand was founded in 2010 by Helen Lo, who had back issues and needed a stylish yet functional bag for frequent travel; her sons Jan and Derek left their jobs in product design research and advertising to help build the business. The company describes itself as one of the first direct-to-consumer bag brands, bootstrapped by the Lo family and grown organically into a globally recognized brand. Its product range includes weekender bags, lifestyle bags, laptop bags, backpacks, tote bags, and wallets and charms.
History
In 2010, Helen Lo, a 65-year-old retired mother with a PhD, joined forces with her two sons to start one of the first direct-to-consumer bag brands. Helen had back issues and needed a stylish yet functional bag for her frequent travels, but found existing options too heavy, too frumpy, too tech-y, overly designed, or pocketless. Her eldest son Jan suggested she invent one herself; Jan did the consumer research and product design and helped lead the charge in finding a manufacturer, while Derek helped build a website, develop the branding, and execute a marketing strategy. The Lo family bootstrapped the business, invested their own savings, and grew it organically into a globally recognized brand featured in outlets including The Today Show, Forbes, The New York Times, Fast Company, Business Insider, Vogue, Refinery29, Travel+Leisure, and Conde Nast Traveler. In December 2016, Fred Lo, a distinguished astronomer, chairman of the board of directors, and one of the most instrumental figures in the launch and success of Lo & Sons, passed away.
