Overview

The Liturgy of the Hours Translation Team (Vietnamese: Nhóm Phiên Dịch Các Giờ Kinh Phụng Vụ) is a Vietnamese Catholic translation collective founded in 1971 in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council's constitution Dei Verbum. It is composed of priests (both diocesan and religious), religious sisters, and lay Catholics with expertise in Scripture, theology, liturgy, pastoral ministry, hymnody, and literature. The group is best known for two major translation projects: the Vietnamese edition of the Liturgy of the Hours (Các Giờ Kinh Phụng Vụ) and a complete Vietnamese Bible (Old and New Testaments), which is widely used in Vietnamese Catholic communities. Although founded voluntarily, it is not officially affiliated with any Catholic organization. The group continues to work on perfecting its second Bible translation (KPB, 2021), a more literal version intended for study and research alongside its first translation (KPA). Its official website, ktcgkpv.org, provides liturgical texts, Bible readings, and resources for the Vietnamese Catholic faithful.

History

The Liturgy of the Hours Translation Team was established in 1971, following the spirit of Dei Verbum, the Second Vatican Council's constitution on Divine Revelation promulgated in 1965. The group brought together priests, religious, and lay Catholics with diverse expertise to translate liturgical and biblical texts into Vietnamese. In its early years, the team produced mimeographed and printed editions of the Liturgy of the Hours, beginning with the Ordinary Time Week I in 1972, followed by Week II in 1973, and all four weeks in 1975. During the same period, it translated rites for Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, Holy Week, and the sacraments of Marriage and Funerals. In 1975, after the end of the Vietnam War, the group faced restrictions on printing but continued its work through mimeographed editions. From 1985 onward, it published major biblical books: the New Testament (1985), the Pentateuch (1986), and Historical Books (1987). In 1988, it released the complete Bible with introductions and simple annotations. The 1990s saw the publication of the Liturgy of the Hours (1990), the Office of Readings (1993–1995), and the Prophetic Books (1996). In the 2000s, the team expanded its outreach with editions for the blind (2003), a synopsis of the four Gospels (2004), and the complete Bible for everyone (2006). It also produced children's Bible stories (2007) and Lectio Divina guides for Sunday Gospels (2008–2010). A revised New Testament was issued in 2009, and a new Bible edition in 2011. As of the 2020s, the group continues to refine its second Bible translation (KPB, 2021), a literal version for study and research, alongside its first translation (KPA). The team remains a voluntary association, not officially affiliated with any Catholic organization, and maintains an active website at ktcgkpv.org.
